The Chennai Super Kings finished the group stage on a high with a 5-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab who needed to win the match by a substantial margin to join the Yellow army in the playoffs. On a track that offered a lot for the pacers, Lungi Ngidi and Deepak Chahar ran through Kings XI’s top order. KXIP posted 153 runs on the board before being bowled out with little contributions from the middle order. The Super Kings promoted their lower order batsmen to see off the swing which also helped him to ease in the chase.

5 – This game was Kings XI Punjab‘s 5th consecutive defeat in the season. They have suffered five and more consecutive losses three times in the IPL. They lost seven in a row in the 2015 season and five in a succession in 2011.
4/10 – Lungi Ngidi’s 4/10 is the cheapest 4-wicket haul in the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings. Ashish Nehra also took 4/10 for CSK against RCB in the 2015 season.
14 – Andrew Tye has taken a total of 14 wickets this season in losing cause. These are the joint most number of wickets a player picked in an IPL season when the team was defeated. James Faulkner also took 14 wickets in Rajasthan Royals‘ in the 2013 season in games his team lost.
18 – Ankit Rajpoot’s 18 dot balls in this game are the joint 2nd most for any bowler in an IPL game. He is also the first Kings XI Punjab bowler to deliver 18 dot balls in an IPL game.
22 – MS Dhoni has finished successful chases with sixes on 22 occasions in his professional career. This game was the 5th such occasion in the IPL.
45 – Suresh Raina’s 45-ball fifty in this match was his slowest in the Twenty20 format. His previous slowest came off 44 balls also for CSK against RCB in the 2015 IPL.
144 – MS Dhoni now has taken 144 catches as a wicketkeeper in the Twenty20 format including the three in this match. He now holds the record for most number of catches as a keeper in T20s surpassing Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 143 catches.
216 – In addition with the 144 catches, Dhoni has effected 72 stumpings in the T20 format thus far. His 216 dismissals as wicketkeeper are the most in this format surpassing Kamran Akmal’s record of 215.
4007 – MS Dhoni completed 4000 runs in the IPL with his four on the final ball of the 18th over. He became the 7th player and 6th Indian to achieve this milestone.
