The opening match between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) turned out a thrilling contest as the game went right down to the wire. Both teams fought tooth and nail, however, MS Dhoni’s men managed to brush the hosts aside at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Quite expectantly, the game attracted massive popularity among the viewers.

The contest was broadcasted in Star Sports and Hotstar and it was recorded the highest ever viewership in the tournament’s history. As per reports in the Financial Express, the game generated a staggering 6,355,000** impressions (Indian Urban, Males 15+AB) which converts to 7.21 rating percentage (India Urban, Males 15+AB)on the Star Network.

“We were confident”- Sanjay Gupta

Following achieving the milestone, Sanjay Gupta, the Managing Director (MD) was over the moon while drooling over the accomplishment. “When we re-imagined the VIVO IPL 2018, we were confident our immersive, multi-lingual, interactive and technology-driven presentation across TV and Digital would resonate strongly with IPL fans across India,” Gupta mentioned.

The MD also highlighted the significance of raising the bar and churning out more impressive performances as the league moves ahead. “We are pleased with the initial record-breaking numbers, which indicate that all the innovations this year have resonated with fans. As the tournament progresses, we look forward to delivering even greater all-round value to all stakeholders,” he added.

The fact that the CSK was staging a comeback after two seasons, made the contest even more intriguing for the followers and they weren’t let down by any means. There was an increase of 37 percent increase in viewership from last season’s opening game between the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In Hotstar, the online platform for watching the game live also generated nearly 42 million impressions, which was nearly 2.3 times from what it was last season. The ongoing season has already been a witness to some riveting encounters in the opening week.
