Australian captain Steve Smith has come under severe criticism following his press conference in Cape Town over the ball-tampering incident. Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera while scruffing the ball with a yellow tape during the course of play on the third day of the ongoing Test match against South Africa. Smith accepted his mistake and also cleared that it was a pre-meditated plan to change the condition of the ball. However, Rajasthan Royals, his IPL franchise, has come up with a statement now on the incident.

There were reports earlier in the day, that Royals have sacked Smith as the skipper of the side but nothing has been confirmed yet by the franchise. Meanwhile, Smith stood down from the captaincy just before the start of day’s play on Sunday. The behaviour of the Australian team has come under the scanner as the position of the so-called ‘leadership group’ is also under threat.

Awaiting instructions from BCCI

Rajasthan Royals, in their recent media release, have cleared that they will not tolerate any actions from any player which will bring disrepute to the game. They also added that they are only awaiting instructions from BCCI over the incident and then will take further steps.

We have been made aware of the controversy of ball tampering in the ongoing Australia – South Africa series and await further instructions from BCCI, before we make any announcement. We at Rajasthan Royals will not tolerate any actions that are unfair by definition and bring disrepute to the game of cricket. Our Zero tolerance policy applies to everyone in our team. Please bear with us,” said Ranjit Barthakur, the Executive Chairman of Royals in their press release on Sunday.

Earlier, the IPL commissioner Rajeev Shukla had also made it clear in his tweet that they were waiting for ICC to react on the ball-tampering and they will take any actions on the players only after that.
