IPL 2018: Star India likely to broadcast playoffs and final on GEC platform

The ongoing eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is at its peak as the teams are eager to book their place in the playoffs. While Delhi Daredevils (DD) is the only team which has been eliminated from the tournament, the other seven teams are still fighting. The season is already being touted as the best ever in terms of competition in the history of the tournament. While the last over thrillers has already grabbed a lot of eyeballs, the host broadcaster is deliberating to telecast the playoffs and the final of the IPL on its General Entertainment Channels (GEC).
Star India had acquired the media rights of the cash-rich league for a whopping amount of Rs 16,347.5 for a period of 5 years. They are trying their best to reach maximum viewers and have televised all the matches so far in six languages across 10 channels and their online platform Hotstar. Their target is to reach 700 Million viewers and this special telecast is only a step to increase the viewership.
Live on Star Plus?
According to the reports in Economic Times, the playoffs and the final of the IPL may be televised on Star Plus. Earlier, the MD of Star India Sanjay Gupta had cleared earlier that they were thinking to show the knockout stages of the tournament on Star Gold. The league stage is set to conclude on May 20 after which the first qualifier will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 22.
The eliminator of and the second qualifier will be hosted by the iconic Eden Gardens on 23rd and 25th of the same month before the top two teams will reach Mumbai against for the title clash. Interestingly, according to Inside Sport, the GEC platform has given better ratings for cricket previously and Star India is looking to cash in on the opportunity.
