The Mumbai Indians (MI) ended their association with Ambati Rayudu when they released the batsman prior to the auction of the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He entered the auction at a base price of INR 50 Lakh. Subsequently, he was roped in by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 2.2 crore and he hasn’t let the franchise down one bit.

He has been stupendous at the top of the order and has played a few match-winning knocks as well. The Guntur-born cricketer has racked up 370 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 46.25. Moreover, he is also the leading run scorer for MS Dhoni’s men. The 32-year old also has flourished in the middle order having scored 41 runs off 24 balls against the Delhi Daredevils (DD).

The accolades for Ambati Rayudu

Recently, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar praised him for the approach he has employed on the cricket pitch. “Batting down the order made no difference to Ambati Rayudu, who is showing why he is such a good player in the limited overs format. He has the ability to know when to accelerate and when to knock the ball around for ones and twos,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Times of India (TOI).

The prime reason behind his success has been the urge to put a price on his wicket and not throw it away during the crunch moments of the game. He has shouldered a chunk of the responsibility and has carved the platform for Chennai to rack up massive scores. Gavaskar, in his column, also brought forth those abilities and mentioned Dhoni’s form as a factor behind CSK’s success.

“Moreover, his determination to stay the length of the innings means that Chennai has one well set batsman at the end too and that makes the last few overs quite profitable. With Dhoni being in incredible hitting form, Chennai are confident of chasing down any score that the opposition may put up,” the former Indian batsman added.
