Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) hasn’t had an overwhelming season last time around in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They finished at the bottom of the table and struggled throughout the entire season. Coming into the eleventh edition of the IPL, Virat Kohli’s mean would have dearly hoped for the fortunes to turn around.

Yesterday, they played their opening game of his season against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They were the favourites ahead of the game, bearing in mind their explosive batting lineup. However, the home team managed to comprehensively brush aside Virat Kohli’s men to register their maiden victory.

Knight Riders storm to victory

RCB began well as Brendon McCullum blazed away in the power-play, which laid the platform for a formidable score on the board. AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli played some blistering strokes to keep the scoreboard moving. Nevertheless, they were jolted with a body blow as Nitish Rana dismissed the stalwarts in successive deliveries.

Mandeep Singh took charge thereafter and his breezy knock propelled RCBs score. Chasing a daunting target, KKR didn’t start handsomely as Chris Woakes pinned the dangerous Chris Lynn. On the other hand, Sunil Narine went hammer and tongs from the outset and notched an impressive half-century, which put the Knights in the driver’s seat.

Meanwhile, the Challengers looked jittery throughout. Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal, the two international spinners, leaked runs at an alarming rate which didn’t help RCBs cause of registering their maiden victory of the series. Following Narine’s blitz, the likes of Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik, the KKR skipper, ensured that RCB were denied a victory.

After the defeat, Ben Duckett, the English cricketer shared his opinion on the game and termed RCB as a ‘joke’. The left-handed batsman took to Twitter and bashed the Virat Kohli-led team. Following his message, he was severely ridiculed by the fans.
