2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently underway. The tournament has been a witness to some riveting encounters in the round-robin phase and kept the audience on the edge of their sets on many occasions. Every team fought tooth and nail to overpower the other. The mega event is into its playoffs stage and the teams have already dished out some awe-inspiring cricket.

The extravaganza has generated a massive amount of viewership on both Television and digital media platforms. In the first Qualifier, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and MS Dhoni’s men emerged triumphant by a couple of wickets to make their way into the final. Meanwhile, as many as 8.3 million people watched the match live on Hotstar, which is a world record.

The massive achievement

“This a new global record. Bigger than Felix Baumgartner’s Supersonic Freefall on youtube. It is a testimony to the power of Vivo IPL, is evidence of the passion of cricket fans. But, above all, we are proud that the tech we are building is expanding the frontiers of online video,” Ajit Mohan, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hotstar was quoted as saying by Insidesport.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator at the Eden Gardens. Dinesh Karthik’s men were clinical and thumped the visitors by 25 runs. Being a knock-out contest, it will be interesting to see the numbers of the match. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will now be pitted against Karthik’s men in Kolkata for the Qualifier 2 on Friday.

The winner of the match will join the Super Kings as the second finalist of this year’s IPL. The numbers surrounding the viewership of the matches are expected to be on the higher side, bearing in mind the importance of the contests. The IPL 2018 final will be played on May 27 in Mumbai.
