Washington Sundar and his meteoric rise in International cricket has been quite a story and he started off quite brilliantly in the ongoing IPL. He bowled a terrific spell against the Kings XI Punjab the other night and took a few crucial wickets as well. He also had some words of encouragement for the other teen spin sensation from Afghanistan.

Playing for the Kings XI Punjab, Mujeeb Zadran picked up the prized scalp of Virat Kohli. Kohli was beaten with his amazing off-cutter and it must’ve been quite a sight for the youngest ever cricketer in IPL history. He gave away 29 runs and picked up one wicket in his four overs and if had not been AB de Villiers’ exploits, his figures would’ve sounded even more brilliant.

Talking about the Mujeeb, Washington said that he’s doing pretty well for a 17-year-old. “He’s been bowling pretty well considering that he’s just 16-17, and he is bowling in the powerplay against one of the best batsmen in the world.”

“It’s pretty amazing, to be honest. To be able to bowl with a lot of variations at this age, you need to give a lot of credit to him. He bowls the googly, he bowls the off-spinner, he bowls carrom ball as well. It is not that easy to read him or pick him from his finger, but as we play a lot of games against him, everyone will be ok against him,” Washington said.

Pretty happy with the way I bowled: Washington

Washington Sundar was Steve Smith‘s lethal weapon in the Powerplay last year whilst playing for the Rising Pune Supergiant. He didn’t get to bowl in the Powerplay yesterday night, but he will be getting some more chances as the tournament progresses. He said he was pretty happy with the way he bowled the other night.

As a spinner, you need to be open to bowling in different scenarios,” said after the match. “I think our fast bowlers bowled a lot in the first six overs especially, and yeah, I had to bowl after 10 overs. It was a different challenge, and the way I bowled, I was pretty happy about it.”
