With every passing day, the buzz surrounding the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is escalating and teams have already started looking into their combination for the forthcoming season. On November 14, the teams submitted the list of retained and released players. A number of big names were freed from their services. Previously, over 1000 players were expected to take part in the auction.

The auction for the next season is set to take place on Tuesday, December 18 in Jaipur. In the meantime, the IPL governing council has shortlisted a total of 346 cricketers, which included a total of 227 Indians. As many as nine players, also known as the marquee players, have listed themselves at a base price of INR 2 crore. Among Indians, Jaydev Unadkat has the topmost base price of INR 1.2 crore.

A massive extravaganza in the offing

Previously, the IPL auction used to be held in Mumbai and Bangalore, and Jaipur will host the same for the maiden occasion. Richard Madley, who had taken part in the auction ever since the inaugural edition in 2018, won’t feature next time around, and Hugh Edmeades, who is an independent fine art, classic car and charity auctioneer, was announced as his replacement.

Meanwhile, the venue for the next edition hasn’t been decided either. The General Elections in India are most likely to take place during April and May and the tournament may be shifted to either South Africa or the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where the event has earlier taken place due to similar reasons. Many franchises have put forth UAE as their choice, citing logistical reasons.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in the championship, having got their hands on the IPL as many as two times. Next year’s auction would be crucial and franchises will need to be careful while making their choices as next year’s World Cup in England and Wales would be played just after the conclusion of the IPL.
