Batting positions are extremely important when it comes to limited-overs cricket and more so in T20 cricket, where teams try to have all of their best batsmen bat the maximum amount of balls possible. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the defending Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, have also given a thought to the same issue and coach Stephen Fleming opined about the batting positions for upcoming season.

Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, will start their campaigns in the first match on March 23 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in front of their home crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and MS Dhoni can be seen batting higher up than his usual no.5 position.

Stephen Flemings confirms MS Dhoni’s batting position for IPL 2019

Head coach of CSK, Stephen Fleming has revealed that MS Dhoni will bat at the no.4 spot for the team during IPL 2019. “Dhoni batted pretty much (at) No. 4 last year but we do use him in a little bit of a flexible role, so that won’t change,” Fleming was quoted by Hindustan Times.

“His (Dhoni’s) form has been outstanding in the past 10 months. We have a new player as well (Kedar Jadhav) which is great. So, we’re really happy with the (batting) order and the thoughts around that,” Fleming was quoted at an event launch of CSK merchandise.

Fleming opines on team balance

Given that the CSK team is made up of players well over the age of 30, Fleming mentioned that the experience and mindset bring all the difference and balance to the team. “We tend not to do it (compare). Because if you start looking at other teams, you’re trapped away from what’s good or bad of your own. There are enough great players with each side, so it comes down to mindset, team environment, and culture and winning big moments,” Fleming was quoted as saying.

Fleming mentioned that the team was high on capturing big moments and it is big on team culture. The young players are empowered to make decisions and it’s what makes CSK different from other teams in the league. He shared the example of Kedar Jadhav, who played just one game last season due to a hamstring injury but won a crucial match against Mumbai Indians (MI).
