Kings XI Punjab is once again bracing up for a big off-field issue after their co-owner Ness Wadia was sentenced for drugs possession while on a skiing holiday to Japan. The sensational turn of events could land the franchise in hot waters which can eventually result in suspension. According to Operational Rules of the IPL, no team official involved with the league can act in a manner which brings disrepute to the team, the league, the BCCI or the game on or off the field. In case the person is found guilty, it can even lead to suspension of the team.

And now a top Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has demanded action against Kings XI Punjab. According to media reports, the official cited the examples of Chennai Super Kings in order to strengthen his claims. He said that the rules should not be different and wants the matter to be dealt by code of ethics committee. Chennai Super Kings along with Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two years in 2015 after their co-owners were found guilty of malpractices.

“If they (CSK) can be suspended for 2 years for betting related offences, this is much more serious and why change the precedent now, this has to be sent to the code of ethics committee and definite action needs to be taken against the franchise and the CO-owner. There are no two rules for different franchises. The least is to ban ness Wadia from all cricketing activities for life,” the official was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports

Response from Wadia’s side

Wadia was arrested in early March at New Chitose Airport in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido after customs officials found 25g of “what appeared to be cannabis resin in his trouser pocket”. In case, the BCCI take any action, Kings XI Punjab could land in big trouble. However, a Wadia Group spokesperson defended the owner, saying;

“The judgement is clear. It is a suspended sentence. Hence, it will not impact Ness Wadia in the discharge of any of his responsibilities and he will continue to play the role that he has done hitherto, both within the Group and outside.”

Kings XI Punjab, meanwhile, are having problems on the field too as they are languishing seventh in the points table.
