The opening match of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Chepauk turned out to be a one-sided affair. The game was one-sided and the MS Dhoni-captained hosts won by eight wickets with seven overs to spare. Moreover, CSK extended its winning streak to seven against Virat Kohli’s men.

Chennai bowlers rip apart the Challengers

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, RCB slumped to 70 all out in 17.1 overs. Only one of their batsmen- Parthiv Patel- got into the double digits. The wicketkeeper scored 29 runs from 35 deliveries with a couple of boundaries and was the last RCB wicket to go down. The veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh started the carnage, picking up three early wickets.

The track turned out to be a spinner’s paradise and later the likes of Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja got into the act and never allowed the batsmen to put together a partnership. Both of the tweakers conceded only 24 runs in their quota of eight overs and picked up five wickets between them. Dwayne Bravo removed Patel to bring the curtains down on the Challengers’ innings.

Patient Super Kings get home

The run-chase started on a jittery note for the much-fancied home team. Yuzvendra Chahal was entrusted to bowl the first over and in his second, he got rid of the dangerous Shane Watson, who has been in decent form of late. Watson couldn’t open his account after facing 10 deliveries. Suresh Raina hit three boundaries and injected momentum in the Super Kings’ innings.

The southpaw scored 19 runs from 21 balls after which he fell prey to the guile and trajectory of Moeen Ali. Rayudu played some impressive strokes and was looking all set to take his team home. The opener ended up scoring 28 runs from 42 balls with two fours and an over-boundary. He was thereafter castled by Mohammed Siraj. Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadeja took the team home.
