Alzarri Joseph of Mumbai Indians hogged the limelight as he recorded the best bowling figures of 6/12 in the history of the IPL. The Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen were left with no other option while playing against the pace of Joseph. The whole MI bowling did a great job in containing runs from the other end in defending their total of 136/7. If not for the Kieron Pollard’s blitz at the end, MI might not have fancied their chances. He scored 39 runs in total across the last two overs of MI innings.

Here are lesser known stats from Mumbai Indians’ 40-run win over the Sunrisers:

A first for the batting first team:

Both Sunrisers and Mumbai Indians faced off in six matches before this game in Hyderabad. The home team won four of those while Mumbai won the other two. However, the common point between the six matches is that the chasing team won all those. However, the streak came to an end with SRH failing to chase the target of 137. Interestingly, MI played three games against the other teams at this venue (Two vs Deccan Chargers and One vs RPS in 2017 final) and won those matches while defending a total.

SRH no more a special team:

By getting bowled out for 96, the Sunrisers Hyderabad registered their first below the 100-run total in the IPL history. Their previous lowest total in the IPL of 113/10 also came against the Mumbai Indians in the 2015 season in Hyderabad. The total of 113 was the highest “lowest IPL total” among the 13 teams to have played in the IPL.

As many as ten teams before this game were restricted below 100 in a completed IPL inning. Gujarat Lions (lowest of 104) and Rising Pune Supergiant (lowest of 108) remain the only teams to not have registered below-100 total in the IPL. However, the two franchises’ existence lasted only two years between 2016 and 2017 in the IPL.

Bairstow and the leg-spinners story:

With 262 runs to his name, the SRH keeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow stands at the 2nd place in the leading run-getters this season. However, the England batsman has his share of struggles against the leg-spinners. In the first match, he was dismissed by KKR’s Piyush Chawla for 39 and followed it with a 45-run knock against RR where he fell to Shreyas Gopal.

Bairstow got out to Yuzvendra Chahal after hitting 114 against RCB and to Rahul Tewatia in the game against DD after scoring 48. His first failure of the season came after he got out scoring only 16 in the bowling of Rahul Chahar in this game against MI.
