The Mumbai Indians won an absolute cliffhanger at the Wankhede Stadium when they locked horns against the Kings XI Punjab in the 24th match of the season. The Men in Blue, sans the service of their regular skipper, were anchored by their stand-in skipper Kieron Pollard in the match. Riding on Pollard’s whirlwind knock, MI won the last ball thriller and chased down 197 for the win. The KXIP camp would know that this match was their for the taking, and they let it slip away.
Earlier in the game, the Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to field first. Rohit Sharma missed his first IPL match in almost a decade and it was Kieron Pollard who led the hosts in the game. It was not a pleasant start for the Men in Blue as the KXIP openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul looked in sublime form. They build up the innings very steadily and soon decided to up the ante. They added 116 runs for the first wicket. The innings slowed down when Gayle departed, but KL Rahul ensured that he provided the final flourish with his hitting. Rahul’s unbeaten century helped KXIP post 197/4 in 20 overs.
In the run chase, the talk was only about Kieron Pollard. The big burly Windies star absolutely clobbered the bowlers mercilessly. He tonked as many as 10 sixes in the match, and that explains how brutal his attack was. The other batters chipped in with handy contributions. Pollard could not finish the game, and Ankit Rajpoot almost defended 15 off the final over. With 2 to win on the last ball, Alzarri Joseph and Rahul Chahar showed sprinting skills to win the match for their side.
Here are the MI Player Ratings for the match:
Quinton de Kock – 4/10
Quinton de Kock had a very good game when MI played KXIP in the reverse fixture earlier this season. He had hit a time fifty back then. In this game though, he had a tough time at the crease. He did not look comfortable hitting the big shots and could hit only two fours during his 23 ball stay at the crease. He toiled hard for his 25 runs.
Siddhesh Lad – 4/10
Siddhesh Lad made his IPL debut in this match. He had to wait for 5 long years for this day in his life. Lad, who is the skipper of the Mumbai side in domestic circuit, had a phenomenal start to his IPL career. He started off with a six on the very first ball the he faced and then backed it up with a four. He then slowed down a bit and was eventually dismissed on 15, being bowled round his legs.
Suryakumar Yadav – 4.5/10
Suryakumar Yadav arrived at the crease quite early in the run chase. He announced himself in fine fashion by clubbing four boundaries in no time. He raced to 21 off 14 deliveries and he decided to continue his merry run at the crease. Unfortunately, the rush of blood cost him his wicket and he perished in his attempt to hit the long ball.
Kieron Pollard – 9.5/10
The Caribbean players are lighting up the IPL this season. Andre Russell has been making a lot of headlines, and now, it was the turn of the veteran superstar Kieron Pollard to take centerstage. Pollard played this match as the stand-in skipper of the MI camp. He shouldered the responsibility of batting in the run chase, and almost singlehandedly won the match for his side. He was unfortunate to get out when MI were a strike away from the victory. Pollard hit 83 off just 31 balls with 10 sixes and 3 fours to his name.
Ishan Kishan – 3/10
After failing to score well in the previous game, another big opportunity beckoned for Ishan Kishan in the match. Ishan largely failed to grab this opportunity as well. The wicketkeeper-batter played as a specialist batsman in the match. But his stay at the crease was painful as he could only score 7 runs off 10 balls before getting run out.
Hardik Pandya – 6/10
Hardik Pandya had a night to forget with the ball. When he walked in to bowl, Chris Gayle took the attack to him in his first over. The pressure mounted on him big time. He came back strong to pick up a couple of wickets. But in his final over, he was whacked for 25 runs by KL Rahul. Pandya finished with 2/57 in his four overs. With the bat, he played a handy cameo of 19 runs to give good company to Pollard in the run chase.
Krunal Pandya – 4/10
Krunal Pandya came in to bat at a crucial stage of the match. He was expected to nudge the ball around and let Kieron Pollard do the bulk of the scoring. Pandya failed miserably and perished on the very second ball that he faced. With the ball in hand, he got only 2 overs to bowl, in which he conceded 17 runs.
Rahul Chahar – 5/10
Young leg spinner Rahul Chahar has been very impressive in this season for MI. Rahul had a very good game, although he failed to pick up any wicket. Rahul bowled his complete quota of four overs, and conceded only 27 runs. This is very impressive considering the fact that a lot of runs were scored in this match.
Alzarri Joseph – 5/10
Alzarri Joseph had a dream debut in the IPL when he played for MI in the previous match. He bagged a six-wicket haul in that game. He failed to repeat his heroics with the ball in this game. Alzarri was taken away for 22 runs in his 2 overs and did not pick any wicket. However, he played a very handy role with the bat. He hit the winning runs for his team in the match and finished with an unbeaten 15 to his name.
Jasprit Bumrah – 4/10
It is not an everyday story when you see Jasprit Bumrah go away for a lot of runs. It was one of those off days at work for the premier Indian speedster. Bumrah bowled his full quota of overs and was taken away for as many as 38 runs. Usually a very lethal bowler, Bumrah bowled two wides too. Much to his respite, he dismissed Sam Curran in the innings to finish with 1/38.
Jason Behrendorff – 4.5/10
The KXIP looked like running away with all the money when Gayle and Rahul were at the crease. It was Jason Behrendorff that provided the first breakthrough for MI by dismissing a dangerous looking Chris Gayle in the 13th over. Behrendorff had his moments of excellence in the match, but was largely expensive earlier in the game when Gayle had taken an attack to him. He returned with figures of 1/35 in his four overs.
