The Chennai Super Kings have made it a habit to win matches in the final over. In their most recent encounter, they beat the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in yet another close last over finish. Some sublime batting by Suresh Raina, combined by a quick cameo from Ravindra Jadeja saw CSK cruise past the target of 161 with 5 wickets in hand. With the win, CSK are now just one win away from making it to the playoffs.

Earlier in the match, KKR had their set opening pair back in action. Against their liking, they lost Sunil Narine very early in the game. The much-fancied middle-order also failed to come good on the day as Imran Tahir and Mithchell Santner bowled very good spells with the ball. Wickets kept coming at regular intervals for CSK, but one man stood tall for the hosts – Chris Lynn. Lynn played a brilliant knock of 82 to anchor KKR’s 161/8 in 20 overs. For the visitors, Tahir was the pick of the bowlers with a four-wicket haul to his name.

In the run chase, CSK had a similar fate to that of KKR. They lost Shane Watson early but Faf du Plessis provided a brisk start to the visitors. Later, Suresh Raina took the baton and rallied along in the run chase. He ran out of partners with the middle order failing to contribute much. Towards the end, some smart work from Ravindra Jadeja and consistent run scoring from Raina saw CSK home with 5 wickets in hand.

Here are the CSK Player Ratings for the match:

Shane Watson – 1/10

Shane Watson’s dry run in the 2019 edition of the IPL continued in this game as well. The former Australian opener failed to get into the double digits yet again. He hit a four early on in the innings but just could not get his act together thereafter. He was trapped lbw by Harry Gurney in the fourth over of the run chase.

Faf du Plessis – 6/10

Faf du Plessis continued to bat in sublime form in the match. He provided a brisk start to CSK with a flurry of boundaries up front. The Proteas veteran gave Andre Russell a taste of his own medicine when he hit four fours in one over bowled by Russell. Du Plessis perished after scoring 24 off 16 balls in his attempt to slog sweep off the bowling of Sunil Narine. Earlier in the game, du Plessis showed his presence on the field too as he pocketed 4 catches.

Suresh Raina – 9/10

Suresh Raina justified the tag of being the Mr IPL yet again. The veteran batter came really good in this match. He showed positive intent ever since he walked out to bat on the day. He was cautious to ensure that he hit one odd boundary every now and then, and not let the pressure creep. He attacked Prasidh Krishna in the end overs when the required rate had started to mount. Raina remained unbeaten on 58 off 42 deliveries with 7 fours and a six to his name.

Ambati Rayudu – 2/10

Ambati Rayudu would know that he had a chance gone begging in this match. He arrived at the crease with 3 deliveries still to be bowled in the powerplay. With ample time in hand, he could have played a masterly knock for his side. But Rayudu looked largely uncomfortable at the crease. He consumed 11 deliveries for his 5 runs and that certainly dented the momentum that Du Plessis had provided to CSK.

Kedar Jadhav – 5/10

The way Kedar Jadhav started off in the innings, provided a lot of promise to the Super Kings dugout. He showed power with a chip shot over the cover fielder. He then showed finesses with a fine glide to third man. He hit another boundary, and a six to bag 20 runs under his belt. A desperate effort to clobber Piyush Chawla on the very first ball of his spell saw Jadhav get caught in the covers.

MS Dhoni – 4/10

The stage was all set for MS Dhoni to play yet another crucial role for his side. His side needed 79 off the last 8 overs and Dhoni knew he had an uphill task. To minimise the pressure, he took charge on Kuldeep Yadav. He mistimed one and was lucky to escape it. On the very next ball, he cleared the fence with a thundering six. He could not get going and was trapped lbw soon after by Sunil Narine on 16.

Ravindra Jadeja – 8/10

With MS Dhoni back in the hut, KKR felt they had a sniff in the game. Ravindra Jadeja had other plans though. He showed a special liking to Harry Gurney in the penultimate over to almost seal the game for his side. He pocketed 16 runs in the over.

In the final over, he hit another boundary to bring his side an inch closer. He remained unbeaten on 31 off just 17 balls with 5 fours to see his side over the line. Earlier in the game, he had an off day with the ball. He was taken away for 49 runs in his spell of four overs.

Mitchell Santner – 7/10

Following his last over heroics in the previous game, Mitchell Santner retained his place in the side. The Kiwi spinner bowled decently well in the match. He bowled in tandem with the other two spinners and ensured that he did not leak too many runs. He conceded 30 runs in his four overs and accounted for the wicket of Sunil Narine, which was the first breakthrough for CSK in the match.

Deepak Chahar – 4/10

Deepak Chahar has been a revelation for the Super Kings this season. Time and again, he has proven to be very economical in the powerplay. Today he had an off day though. He failed to pick up a wicket early on in the innings, as he has usually done. He went wicketless in the match. He conceded 36 runs in the four overs that he bowled.

Shardul Thakur – 8/10

Shardul Thakur has been on the expensive note of things in recent times. Albeit he has been a wicket-taking bowler, he has conceded a lot of runs in his spell. This match served an exception though. He was given the new ball in hand and he proved to be very efficient with it. He was the most economical bowler for his team in the match, giving away just 18 runs in his four overs. He picked up the wickets of Dinesh Karthik and Shubman Gill in the match.

Imran Tahir – 9/10

Imran Tahir was the pick of the bowlers for CSK in this match. He finished with 4/27 to his name in four overs. He broke the all-important Lynn-Rana partnership by dismissing the latter on 21 in the 11th over. On the very next ball in the same over, he sent Robin Uthappa packing for a golden duck. He then dismissed Andre Russell, the dangerous in-form batter. Also, he saw the back of Chris Lynn, the top scorer for KKR in the match.
