The Mumbai Indians (MI) avenged their previous defeat against the Delhi Capitals (DC) with a 40-run victory at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. The hosts were a tad lacklustre both in the batting and bowling department and fell like a pack of cards. With their sixth victory, Mumbai moved to the second position of the points table of this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL) with 10 victories.

Krunal and Hardik propel Mumbai

Mumbai won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. The decision didn’t backfire and they ended up scoring 168 for five on a strip that wasn’t a batting paradise by any stretch of the imagination. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock made full use of the powerplay and notched 57 runs in it. Amit Mishra castled Rohit after the right-hander scored 30 from 22. Ben Cutting perished after scoring a couple.

De Kock was looking ominous, having scored 35 from 27 with two fours and as many sixes. A horrendous mix-up with Suryakumar Yadav led to his run-out in the 10th over. Yadav scored 26 before falling prey to Kagiso Rabada. Thereafter, the Pandya-brothers, Krunal and Hardik, came to the party and added 54 runs off 26 balls. Even as Krunal stayed not out on 37 from 26, Hardik scored a breezy 32 from 15.

The Capitals huff and puff

Prithvi Shaw started off the Capitals’ run-chase with a couple of classical boundaries. Then it was the turn of Shikhar Dhawan to get himself going by finding the fence quite a few times. The duo put on a partnership of 49 in 6.3 overs. Rahul Chahar gave MI the first breakthrough, nipping out Dhawan, who went for a reverse-sweep only to see his stumps rattled. The southpaw scored 35 from 22 balls.

Iyer, the Capitals’ skipper, couldn’t get going and he became Chahar’s second victim. The middle-order, consisting of stalwarts Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant could only add 13 runs as the home team kept sliding downhill. Axar Patel tried hard with 26 runs from 23 balls, but the required rate kept escalating significantly. The flurry of wickets made a game a completely one-sided affair.
