The Mumbai Indians (MI) scripted an act of perfect revenge for the loss against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in their first game of IPL 2019. They have finally applied breaks on Delhi’s winning streak. The side might have won three games in a row but couldn’t resist the force MI usually is. Rahul Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah were terrific for the visitors in this game.

While Chahar got through the top-order, it was Bumrah who ensured that there weren’t any fireworks from the middle-order. Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya also had important roles to play in this victory. Krunal was good in all the three departments of the game while Hardik provided the finishing touch to Mumbai’s batting innings. The Capitals never got going in the match – neither with the bat nor with the ball.

The Pandya brothers infuse life back into the Mumbai innings

The Mumbai openers gave the side a terrific start after they elected to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock piled up 57 runs in the first six overs. However, the first ball after the field restrictions was lifted, Amit Mishra got Rohit Sharma clean bowled. Interestingly, MI decided to send Ben Cutting to bat at number three. But the gamble didn’t pay off and the Australian could only get 2 runs.

Things slowed down drastically in the middle overs with Suryakumar Yadav only managing to accrue 26 runs from 27 balls. However, the Pandya brothers came to the rescue and helped Mumbai get to a good total on what was a slow, sluggish pitch. While Krunal was unbeaten on 37, Hardik got out in the last over after scoring 32 runs from 15 balls. The visitors managed to put on 168 runs on the board in 20 overs.

A blip in the middle-order for the Capitals

Shikhar Dhawan started his knock in the fourth gear straightaway. He attacked the bowlers and scored 35 runs off 22 balls. But once he fell, it all started going awry for the home team. Prithvi Shaw could never get going at any stage of his innings except for the two boundaries that he hit early on. He struggled his way through to 20 runs and took 24 balls to get them.

The middle-order failed yet again for Delhi. Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant could only get 3, 3 and 7 runs respectively. The required run rate kept mounting up and it was near impossible for the lower-order batsmen to take the team through. Axar Patel scored 26 runs but the home team kept on losing wickets one after the other.

Ultimately, they could only get 128/9 in 20 overs and lost the match by 40 runs. Rahul Chahar dismissed the likes of Shaw, Dhawan and Iyer in this game while Bumrah picked up two wickets and affected one runout.

Brief Scores:

MI: 168/5 in 20 overs (Krunal Pandya 37*, Quinton de Kock 35, Kagiso Rabada 2/38)

DC: 128/9 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 35, Axar Patel 26, Rahul Chahar 3/19)

Result: Mumbai Indians won the match by 40 runs.
