It turned out to be another awful day for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as they lost their fifth consecutive match in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). This time around, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were on the other side, the game being played at the RGI Stadium in Hyderabad. The Dinesh Karthik-captained KKR slumped to a defeat by nine wickets and keep waiting for their misery to end.

Sunrisers restrict the Knights

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, KKR got off to a thunderous start courtesy of a 42-run stand in 16 balls between Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine. Khaleel Ahmed uprooted Narine’s leg-stump to separate the duo. In his next over, Khaleel pinned Shubman Gill. The likes of Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik got out cheaply as well. Meanwhile, the momentum provided by the openers was lost.

After Karthik’s dismissal, Rinku Singh and Lynn tried to pull back things for KKR with a stand of 51 runs. However, the scoring rate had gone down. Lynn scored 51 but took 47 balls to score them. Following Rinku and Lynn’s wickets, Andre Russell was yet again in with a massive task. The Jamaican sent Bhuvneshwar Kumar, two times into the stands, but got out in the same over. KKR ended with 159.

The Knights slide further

With a pretty inexperienced bowling, the job of defending the total was always going to be an uphill job for the visiting team. In the second over, IPL debutant Prithvi Raj produced an opportunity, but to his dismay, KC Cariappa couldn’t hold on to the ball and conceded four of it. As a result, Jonny Bairstow got a lifeline and thereafter, he along with the left-handed David Warner took the attack to the opposition.

The duo cobbled together a partnership of 131 in 74 balls for the first wicket and put the game out of the Knights’ radar. Raj’s bad day continued when Piyush Chawla dropped a catch of his bowl, but he picked up his maiden IPL wicket, castling David Warner, who scored 67 from 38. Bairstow remained not out on 80 from 43 with seven boundaries and four sixes to see the Sunrisers through to victory.
