The game between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) turned out to be an absolute cliffhanger. Prior to this game, the Kings didn’t win a single game at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. However, the team, led by Ravi Ashwin, managed to turn their fortunes around and lost the game by 14 runs. They were in trouble but didn’t allow the situation to unnerve them.

The Universal Boss shines

After winning the toss and electing to field first, the Royals had to face the wrath of the Punjab batsmen. Dhawal Kulkarni found KL Rahul’s outside-edge and sent him packing. Thereafter, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal steadied the ship with a partnership of 56 runs in 49 balls. Agarwal hit a four and a couple of sixes but eventually fell prey to Krishnappa Gowtham after scoring 22 runs.

Gayle didn’t stop and accomplished his half-century in 33 balls. The hulk-like Windies batsman went on to score 79 runs from 47 balls with eight boundaries and four sixes. Ben Stokes got his prized wicket in the 16th over. Sarfaraz Khan, who was brought by KXIP this season, churned out a handy knock of 46 runs from 29 balls with six boundaries and one six. Punjab ended with 184 for four.

Punjab holds their nerve

The run-chase started on a tremendous note for the hosts as Ajinkya Rahane and Jos Buttler raced away to a stand of 78 runs from 49 deliveries. Rahane played some gorgeous strokes and he ended up scoring 27 runs from 20 balls with four boundaries. Buttler scored a fifty in 29 balls and there was a drama surrounding his dismissal. KXIP captain Ravi Ashwin ‘mankaded’ him in the 13th over.

Buttler was furious after the incident and he walked off furiously. Steve Smith and Sanju Samson got the hosts close to the target with a stand of 40 runs. Then from nowhere, the Royals’ lost wickets in heaps and their innings collapsed. On the other hand, the kings held their nerves and got home. Sam Curran, MMujeeb Ur Rahman and Ankit Rajpoot picked up two wickets each.
