It was just crazy hitting at the Eden Gardens on a super Sunday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). First Andre Russell, batting at three for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), lit up Kolkata with his 80-run knock off just 40 balls. But then, Hardik Pandya came out to bat and literally threatened, at one stage, to pull off the heist. He smashed the fastest fifty of this season and in no time, approached his century. But he got out on 91 which were scored off just 34 deliveries with six fours and as many as nine sixes.

The chase didn’t begin on an auspicious note for the Mumbai Indians (MI) as their opener Quinton de Kock got out for a four-ball duck. Even Rohit Sharma‘s stay was a brief one and the top four of the visitors were never in the game. MI crawled to 58/4 in the ninth over and this is where Hardik joined Kieron Pollard in the middle. The all-rounder smacked the ball out of the park from the word go.

Though Pollard struggled, Hardik continued to hit some towering sixes and at one stage, it seemed like he will literally pull off an unthinkable. But Harry Gurney killed the contest by dismissing him in the 18th over and Mumbai could only reach 198 runs after 20 overs as KKR finally won the game after six matches and they are still alive in the tournament.

Russell storm at the Eden

After being put in to bat first, KKR opened with Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn and the duo didn’t disappoint. The former started hitting in the first over itself off Barinder Sran. Both the players laid the platform perfectly for the team. They added 96 runs in just 57 deliveries and finally, Andre Russell was sent in to bat at number three. Lynn was dismissed by Rahul Chahar on 54.

MI had a plan while bowling to Russell and they were successful in keeping him quiet for the first few deliveries. Gill, however, took care of the run-scoring at that point in time. Once the talented batsman was dismissed by Hardik Pandya on 76, the Caribbean force took control of the proceedings. He ripped apart the Mumbai Indians’ bowling line-up with utter disdain to smack 80 runs at a strike-rate of 200.

He was only 16 off 14 deliveries and then scored 64 runs off his next 26 balls to end his innings with six fours and eight sixes. KKR were propelled to an unthinkable score of 232 runs for the loss of two wickets after 20 overs. Though Hardik threatened with his gigantic knock, the score proved enough eventually.
