Match 50 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will see the top two teams in the points table locking horns. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and this will also be the last home game for the Men in Yellow as far as the league stage is concerned. However, if they are to earn a right to play the first qualifier at home, CSK should make sure that they win at least one game to stay in the top two.

MS Dhoni continues to have the fitness issues and the team has not looked the same in their Thala’s absence. Their abject surrender in the game against Mumbai Indians (MI) was a testimony to it and Suresh Raina will have to lead from the front. He played a reckless shot in the chase and should look to bat through with Dhoni not there in the middle-order now. The rest of the players also have to up their game in order to go past the table toppers.

DC are currently on a three-match winning streak. They virtually ended RCB’s campaign in the previous outing and will now be looking to seal their place in the top two. They haven’t won against CSK at the Chepauk since 2010 and the Shreyas Iyer-led team look confident this time. They have also qualified for the playoffs and the team believes in its abilities. They might run CSK close and might even beat them with the way the home team is playing in Dhoni’s absence.

Pitch Report

The pitch at Chepauk turned significantly as the match progressed last week. Both the teams are expected to stack their line-up with the spinners. Despite dew making its presence felt, the side winning the toss might opt to bat first after what transpired in CSK-MI encounter. Having said that, the team batting first should post enough on the board.

When it comes to playing in Chennai, the first thing players have to deal with is humidity. The temperature normally hovers in the high 30s but it is expected to be cloudy all day on Wednesday. There are 3% chances of rain and it remains to be seen if the heavens open up during the match.

Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis were spotted training with the team and are expected to walk back into the playing XI. Also, CSK might ponder playing the specialist wicketkeeper in Narayan Jagadeesan as MS Dhoni still doesn’t seem to be fit. Dhruv Shorey, Mitchell Santner and Murali Vijay look the likeliest candidates to make way for these players. Raina will continue to lead the side.

DC look completely equipped to take on CSK at Chepauk. They played on a similar surface back home a few days ago and they are expected to go in unchanged. The management though will hope that the opener Prithvi Shaw comes to the party now that there is no pressure on him with the team already qualified. Dhawan and Iyer have been consistent while Pant has struggled in that aspect.

Du Plessis likes to be in the thick of things more often. He failed in two outings before sitting out of the previous fixture due to illness. The Proteas skipper will be raring to play a defining knock with the playoffs approaching fast. The Dad’s army will need one of its experienced guys to get into the groove soon. Faf is the pillar of this batting line-up and with Raina not in the best of the nicks, he is expected to take up more responsibility.

Shikhar Dhawan – DC

The way the Chepauk track behaves, one needs the experience to score runs. Dhawan is well equipped to do that. He will have to hold one end up and let others bat around him. The southpaw has been amazingly consistent this season and the DC team management will need him to play the same way for the rest of the season.
