Coming into the game, Kings XI Punjab had no realistic chance of making it to the playoffs though there was a mathematical scenario. The Punjab franchise might not get in top four but they surely had a chance of stopping their opponent Chennai Super Kings finish in top two. They needed the target of 171 to be chased in 14.2 or fewer overs which looked achievable given the start they got. However, once both openers got out in the 11th over after a century stand, the hosts settled down to consolation win.

Here are the lesser known stats recorded during KXIP’s win that helped them to escape from finishing at the bottom:

Faf’s best wasn’t enough for CSK:

Faf du Plessis scored 96 before getting bowled by Sam Curran in the penultimate over. This is now Du Plessis’ highest score in the IPL also the joint highest individual score for CSK in this IPL. In fact, this is the highest score in an IPL inning by a CSK player when on the losing side. The previous highest was recorded by Suresh Raina who scored 87 in only 25 balls in the 2014 Qualifier game in Mumbai also against Kings XI.

Fastest fifty vs CSK:

KL Rahul’s 19-ball fifty is now the fastest fifty in the IPL and the first in less than 20 balls against the Chennai Super Kings. David Warner’s 20-ball effort in the 2015 edition was the previous fastest in the IPL against CSK. Before Rahul’s effort, CSK remained the only active team to not concede a fifty in less than 20 balls in the IPL.

Harbhajan recovers strongly:

Harbhajan Singh conceded 41 runs in his first two overs before he returned with 3/16 in his second spell. The 57 runs in total he conceded are the most by any player in an IPL game for taking three or more wickets. Karanveer Singh was taken for 54 runs despite a 4-wicket haul for the KXIP in the 2014 IPL final against KKR. Morne Morkel is the other bowler to have conceded 50+ runs for 3+ wickets in an IPL game. The pacer had figures of 3/50 in the 2012 season game against PWI while playing for DD.

Rahul nearly betters his own record:

KL Rahul completed his fifty in only 19 balls which he faced in the first four overs of the Kings XI Punjab’s innings. This is the 2nd earliest a player has got to a fifty in a team’s innings in the IPL. The record is held by KL Rahul himself as he reached the 50-run mark by 2.5 overs of KXIP’s innings in the last season when he scored a 14-ball fifty. No other individual has scored a fifty in the first four overs of a team innings in the IPL.

Raina gets to 800 vs KXIP:

The Kings XI Punjab are the 3rd opponent against which Suresh Raina has scored 800+ runs. The left-hander scored over 800 runs also against KKR and MI. David Warner and Virat Kohli are the other players who have scored 800+ runs against an opponent in the IPL. Warner got these against KKR and KXIP while Kohli scored against Delhi Capitals/Daredevils.
