The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were in with a must-win scenario in their match against the Mumbai Indians (MI). But unfortunately, Dinesh Karthik & Co. couldn’t handle the pressure and were demolished by nine wickets. Mumbai outplayed the Men in Gold and Purple in all the aspects. Moreover, Rohit Sharma’s men also dethroned Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from the top of the table.

The Knight Riders huff and puff

On a decent batting wicket, Mumbai won the toss and elected to field and the decision worked as the Knight Riders could only manage an under-par score of 133 in 20 overs. Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn put on 49 runs for the first wicket in 37 balls. Hardik Pandya trapped Gill in front to strike first blood. In his next over, Pandya got rid of the ominous-looking Lynn, who got 41 off 29 with two fours and four sixes.

In the next 13.5 overs, KKR scored only 84 runs. Robin Uthappa had a painstaking stint in the middle, having scored 40 off 47. Dinesh Karthik also got out cheaply. However, Lasith Malinga delivered the body blow and sent Andre Russell back for a golden duck. Nitish Rana chipped in with 26 off 13 at the death, but KKR fell way short of the target they would’ve expected to get at the start of the innings.

All too easy for Mumbai

A required rate of 6.7 was never going to be a matter of concern for an in-form Mumbai batting lineup, especially at the Wankhede. The hosts notched 46 runs in the mandatory powerplay as Kolkata flayed their hands helplessly for a wicket. Prasidh Krishna gave the visitors a breather as he nipped out Quinton de Kock. The South African left-handed batsman scored 30 off 23 with one boundary and three sixes.

Thereafter, Suryakumar Yadav joined his captain Rohit Sharma in the middle and the duo took Mumbai home with 23 balls to spare. Rohit didn’t throw the kitchen sink at everything and notched his half-century off 44 balls. He remained unbeaten on 55 off 48 with eight fours. Surya also played his strokes without nurturing any inhibition and churned out 46 runs off 27 balls with five fours and two sixes.
