Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) escaped narrowly against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). However, the team, captained by Dinesh Karthik, brushed aside the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) comfortably and won their second consecutive game by 28 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Most importantly, they moved to the top of the points table, dethroning the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who also have two victories.

KKR batters take the attacking route

Punjab won the toss and elected to field first and the decision backfired miserably on them as the hosts racked up a colossal score of 188 for four. Sunil Narine laid into debutant spinner Varun Chakravarthy and plundered 25 runs in his second over. He was nipped out by Hardus Viljoen. Chris Lynn hot tow fours and fell prey to Mohammed Shami. Thereafter, Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana took over.

The duo cobbled together a stand of 110 runs off 66 balls to lay the platform for a blistering finish. Even as Uthappa notched 67 from 50 balls, Rana raced away to 63 from 34 balls. However, it was yet again Andre Russell, who unfolded mayhem in the opponent’s camp with a blitzkrieg of 48 from 17 balls with three fours and five sixes. For Punjab, Shami, Varun, Viljeon and Andre Tye picked up one wicket.

Punjab crumble under pressure

Lockie Ferguson nipped out KL Rahul to give KKR their first breakthrough. Chris Gayle found the boundary a few times, but Russell got rid of the big fish, much to the home team’s delight. The Jamaican was looking dangerous after scoring 20 from 13 balls. Sarfaraz Khan promised after scoring 13 at a run-a-ball and he became Russell’s second victim. At the other end, Mayank Agarwal was looking determined.

He scored a well-compiled half-century and he got out to Piyush Chawla after scoring 58 runs from 34 deliveries. The knock was laced with six fours and one over-boundary. David Miller, who replaced Nicholas Pooran, scored an impressive fifty. To his dismay, his efforts went in vain. In the end, he remained not out on 59 from 40 balls. Mandeep Singh contributed with 33 runs from 15 balls.
