Andre Russell’s power-hitting helped the Kolkata Knight Riders for second consecutive time with the Kings XI Punjab being on the receiving end this time. Russell’s 48 came in only 17 balls that pushed KKR’s total to 218/4; at least 20 runs more than on expected lines. Some tight bowling from the home team’s pacers restricted the Kings XI to 77/3 after ten overs. Despite scoring 113 runs from the last ten overs, the visiting team ended 28 runs short of the Knight Riders’ total.

Here are the lesser known stats from KKR’s win against KXIP during the high-scoring game in Kolkata:

A big total without a big inning:

Kolkata Knight Riders finished with 218/4 in their 20 overs with the contributions from Robin Uthappa (67*), Nitish Rana (63) and Andre Russell (45). As a result, they recorded the joint- highest IPL total without a 70+ score from an individual. Back in the 2010 season, the Mumbai Indians also finished with 218/7 against the Delhi Daredevils where their top scorer was Sachin Tendulkar with 63.

During the previous edition, the KKR posted 245/6 also against the Kings XI Punjab in Indore. The highest individual score for the KKR team was 75 from Sunil Narine. The total of 245/6 is the highest IPL total and the 2nd highest in all T20s where the highest score was 75 or lesser. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali game this season, Andhra posted 252/4 against Manipur where the highest individual score was only 71.

New highs at the Eden Gardens:

The Eden Gardens is generally considered as a high-scoring venue but hardly witnessed extremely high scoring matches. The total of 218/4 by the Knight Riders in this game is the highest total in the IPL by any team at this venue. The previous highest IPL total at this venue was recorded by the Mumbai Indians who made 210/6 during the 2018 edition against KKR only. The 218/4 by KKR is also the 2nd highest T20 total at the Eden Gardens.

Uttar Pradesh posted 235/3 against Bengal in the 2018 Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. The 17 sixes during the KKR innings are the most in a Twenty20 innings at this venue surpassing the 15 they hit in the previous season against Delhi Daredevils. The 24 sixes in this game are also the highest number of sixes in a Twenty20 match in Kolkata. The 408 runs scored by both the sides in this game are the most in a T20 game at the Eden Gardens going past 404 runs during the KKR-KXIP game during the 2010 edition.

Not the best of starts to the IPL:

Varun Chakravarthy was taken to the cleaners by Sunil Narine in his maiden over of the IPL. He conceded 25 runs as Narine scored 24 runs from five balls in his opening over including three sixes. Varun was bought by the KXIP for 8.4 crores during the auction based on his exploits in the TNPL 2018. During that tournament, the leg-spinner bowled four overs in all the ten games he played but conceded 25+ runs only once.

His most expensive bowling spell in the tournament of 4-0-28-0 was surpassed in only 1.1 overs as he conceded 29 runs by then. Varun was hit for only three sixes during that tournament; the same he conceded in his first over of the league. The 25 runs he conceded in his first over of the game are also the most by any player in their first over on IPL debut. Cameron White was hit for 24 runs in the only over he bowled in the first ever IPL game during 2008.
