The Indian Premier League (IPL) is approaching its business end now. Most of the teams are left only with four matches in the league stage and the race to qualify for the playoff stage has intensified more than ever. Mumbai Indians (MI), unlike the previous edition, has peaked early this year and are looking the favourites to go into the playoffs and are currently enjoying a six-day break ahead of the next game.

They played against the Rajasthan Royals on Saturday and are scheduled next to face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday. However, the franchise has decided to release its players for four days and come back fresh for the next game and the last phase of the league. The step has also been taken to manage the workload of the players it seems.

“Players are the priority and the only instruction to the boys was that whatever you do, don’t get anywhere near a bat or ball. They should unwind, relax, switch off and focus on enjoying the four-day break,” the source was quoted as saying by Cricket Next.

Move to keep World Cup players fresh

Mumbai Indians has taken this initiative to keep their World Cup-bound players fresh. It has been learnt that they have been given time to spend time with their families and also the rest will help them give their best for their respective teams in the mega event in England.

“Not just the likes of Rohit, Bumrah or Hardik. We have the likes of Quinton de Kock, Lasith Malinga and other players as well who will be playing the World Cup. The idea is to manage their workload in such a manner that they can give it their best when they play in the showpiece event. While the foreign players have mostly gone to Chennai directly and are enjoying there with their families, the Indian players have headed home,” the source further added.

As far as the IPL is concerned, MI currently stand at the second position with 12 points to their name after 10 matches and they will be looking to finish in the top two to get an extra shot at making it to the finals.
