Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the teams, that know the tricks to trump in crunch games. The same was on display in the Qualifier 2 in Visakhapatnam. MS Dhoni-led CSK defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets and progressed to the final of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). They will now face the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday in a bid to become the most successful team in the IPL.

Capitals huff and puff to 147

The Capitals after losing the toss had to strain and could only score 147 in their 20 overs. Both Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan perished inside the mandatory powerplay. Even as Deepak Chahar trapped Shaw in front, Harbhajan accounted for Dhawan’s wicket. Colin Munro scored a handy 27 off 24 balls, but he hit one straight into the hands of Dwayne Bravo in the deep. He fell prey to Ravindra Jadeja.

Shreyas Iyer couldn’t get going after an 18-ball 13 while Rishabh Pant got 38 runs off 25 deliveries. The southpaw rotated the strike and also smacked two fours and a six. The Capitals kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jadeja was entrusted to bowl the final over and that turned out to be costly for CSK as 16 runs were scored courtesy of some big hits from Ishant Sharma and Trent Boult.

Faf and Watto crush the Capitals

Delhi Capitals’ bowlers started well and didn’t give many freebies to the Super Kings’ batsmen. Shane Watson couldn’t quite find his timing but didn’t throw his wicket away. At the other end, Faf du Plessis got set and churned out some awe-inspiring strokes to inject momentum into the innings. The duo scored 42 runs in the powerplay and then accomplished their half-century stand off 43 deliveries.

Watson skied one off Amit Mishra, but luck favoured him and the ball fell safely. Du Plessis got his fifty in 37 balls after which Trent Boult gave DC their first breakthrough, dismissing du Plessis in the 11th over. Meanwhile, Watto found his touch, gradually and reached his fifty with an over-boundary off 31 balls. In the next over, Mishra dismissed him.

The onus was then on Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu to guide CSK home, but the former got out to Axar Patel. Raina managed 11 off 13 balls. Thereafter, Rayudu remained not out on a run-a-ball 20 and took his team home with one over to spare.
