The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) resorted to the services of Rinku Singh in the erstwhile edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Knights shelled out INR 80 lakhs for the 21-year-old left-handed batsman. However, the Uttar Pradesh-born batsman could only play four matches in which he managed 29 runs at an average of 7.25, much to his disappointment.

Nevertheless, ahead of the upcoming IPL, Singh has looked in red-hot form. In the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, Rinku notched 953 runs in 10 matches at an incredible average of 105.08. Even in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Singh scored 208 runs from 11 games at a decent average of 29.71.

His strike-rate was on the higher side though (180.86). with a top score of 56 not out against Services in Delhi. After the stupendous run at the domestic circuit, the southpaw believes that he can deliver in the next edition after working on several issues with Abhishek Nayar during the off-season.

I called up Abhishek Nayar to discuss those issues

“A lot has changed over the past one year. I was going through a prolonged lean patch – I did not have a great domestic season, or for that matter, even at the IPL, I was struggling. There were lots of issues I was facing with my batting,” Singh was quoted as saying in kkr.in.

“I called up Abhishek (Nayar) to discuss those issues and told him I needed some practice and guidance. He immediately agreed to help me out. Since then, all the mistakes I was making in the IPL, and whatever issues I was having with my batting, he made me work hard on fixing them,” he mentioned.

“I was rushing a lot during the IPL and I wasn’t thinking clearly enough. Nayar pointed out what I needed to fix, and helped me work on my weaknesses. Soon after my sessions with Nayar, I went to play for UPCA in the Ranji Trophy. Those sessions I had at the KKR Academy helped me a lot, and as a result, I had a good season with my team,” Singh mentioned.

The Knight Riders, captained by Dinesh Karthik, are scheduled to play their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 24.
