Mumbai Indians (MI) are the three-time winners of the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL), but last season, they couldn’t progress to the playoffs. In a bid to turn their fortunes around, they released quite a few players ahead of next year’s auction and also traded in Quinton de Kock from Royal Challengers Bangalore (MI). They were also amongst the more active participants in the auction.

Yesterday, they also roped in veteran Yuvraj Singh and Sri Lankan cricketer Lasith Malinga. Yuvraj, at a base price of INR 1 crore, didn’t find a buyer in the first round, but the team, captained by Rohit Sharma, picked him up in the second instance. He was a part of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in last edition’s IPL and couldn’t live up to expectations and didn’t feature consistently for the franchise.

And the fact that he was released by Punjab didn’t spring a surprise by any means. On the other hand, Malinga was their bowling mentor in the tenth edition. However, he registered himself as a marquee player and at a base price of INR 2 crore and Mumbai picked him up at his base price. They also filled their squad with some useful players like Anmolpreet Singh, Barinder Sran and Pankaj Jaiswal.

Moreover, they bagged the services of 17-year-old Jammu and Kashmir right-arm fast bowler Rasikh Salam Dar. In the meantime, Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian cricketer, and Mumbai Indians’ icon, expressed his satisfaction after having Yuvraj and Malinga along with the youngsters in their ranks.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “A perfect mix of experience and youth picked up at the #IPLAuction by @mipaltan! Glad to have Lasith Malinga and @yuvstrong12 in the MI team along with the likes of @sranbarinder, Anmolpreet Singh, Pankaj Jaswal & Rasikh Dar. #CricketMeriJaan,”
