The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 got underway with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the MA Chidambaram stadium. The match proved to be a one-sided affair thanks to a pitch that turned square and saw batsmen struggling against quality spin.
MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bowl first and seeing the dry pitch employed spinners at the start and Harbhajan Singh picked three quick wickets to put brakes on RCB’s scoring. After him, Imran Tahir picked 3/9 and apart from Parthiv Patel, who made 29, no batsman reached double figures. RCB was bowled out for just 70 in 18th over.
CSK chased down the total for the loss of just three wickets, thanks to Ambati Rayudu’s 28 and won the match by seven wickets with more than two overs to spare.
Sanjay Manjrekar takes a dig at RCB batting
Sanjay Manjrekar, former India batsman-turned-commentator is very active on social media and is part of IPL 2019 commentary team. After RCB was dusted by Chennai Super Kings, he took to Twitter to take a sly dig at the RCB’s misfortunes. “It all went WROGN for RCB tonight,” Manjrekar tweeted and went onto add a winking emoji as well.
It all went WROGN for RCB tonight.😉

His ‘WROGN’ dig was aimed at the sponsor of RCB, which is an apparel brand ‘created in collaboration with Virat Kohli’ (according to their website).
Virat Kohli criticizes the pitch
While Chennai Super Kings went in with three spinners in Imran Tahir, Ravindra Jadeja and Harbhajan Singh, RCB went in with Moeen Ali and Yuzvendra Chahal, who both did well, with Chahal giving away just 6 runs in his four overs and picked the wicket of Shane Watson.
“No one wants to start like this, but it’s good to get a game like this out of the way – this early in the tournament. A scrappy start to the league, but I don’t think either team had control over it, the pitch was under the covers for 4 days, but we should have batted better, 110-120 would have been a fighting score,” Kohli was quoted saying in post-match presentation.
