Mumbai Indians (MI) lifted their fifth IPL trophy by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 5 wickets in the final of the ongoing 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This is their second title on a trot and the defending champions again managed to stamp their authority on the Indian league.

The toss went in the favour of DC skipper Shreyas Iyer and he elected to bat first. With the ball, the defending champions had a fierce start as New Zealand seamer Trent Boult wiped off the threat of Marcus Stoinis at the very first ball of the evening. Boult was on fire as he returned in the third over to take his second wicket in the mandatory powerplay and Ajinkya Rahane had to go back to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs.

This was followed by Jayant Yadav taking the priced wicket of in-form opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who was playing at 15. As a result, Delhi with a score of 22/3 were in danger of being blown away in their maiden IPL final. However, skipper Iyer and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant started recovery as the two collected a 96-run stand to shift the momentum towards their side.

After spending a considerable amount of time on the crease, the two batters were about to explode in the last 6 overs. But the pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile gave a much-needed breakthrough to his team by ending a stunning knock of Pant (56 off 38).

The prized wicket of Pant slowed down the innings for the Capitals as they could add just 38 runs to the scoreboard off the last five overs while losing three wickets. Thus, DC managed to post a below-par total of 156 on the board. Iyer emerged as the highest run-getter for DC with 65 runs in 50 deliveries. Boult was the pick of the bowler for Mumbai Indians as he finished with the figures of 4-0-30-3.

In response, Mumbai had an explosive start with the bat as the opening duo of Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma started firing from the very first ball. The two collected 45 runs but Stoinis gave first hiccup to MI by naming the scalp of De Kock. However, this didn’t stop the flow of runs for Mumbai as DC bowlers had a bad day at the office tonight.

Though the Capitals tried to enter the game by taking wickets in the second-half of the innings, it was too late as Mumbai easily chased down the target of 157 on the back of a splendid half-century by the captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit played a winning knock of 68 runs off 51 deliveries to take his team towards their fifth IPL crown.
