The two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered an easy victory by 60 runs against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. With this big win, the Knight Riders not only grabbed two important points to stay relevant in the tournament but also improved their net run rate to an extent to claim the fourth position in the points table with 14 points in 14 games. Royals, on the other hand, are now officially out of the playoffs race and ended their campaign in IPL 2020 with a defeat.

Having won the toss, Steve Smith decided to bowl first with an expectation to sing the winning notes once again. As the match commenced, the star performer of the last fixture, Nitish Rana couldn’t perform the same magic with the willow again and bagged a golden duck. Shubman Gill (36 off 24) and Rahul Tripathi (39 off 34) collected a 72-run stand in 8 overs to provide a good start to the team.

However, tonight was a disappointing and rare occasion for KKR as three of the main batsmen including gloveman Dinesh Karthik, all-rounder Sunil Narine and Rana got out on a duck. In such a pressure situation, skipper Eoin Morgan emerged as a ‘messiah’ for his team as he played a blistering knock of unbeaten 68 runs off 35 deliveries.

Andre Russell and Pat Cummins also made partnership with Morgan in bits and pieces as they scored 25 and 15 runs respectively. Thus, KKR managed to post a competitive total of 191 runs at the loss of 7 wickets at the board in their 20 overs.

Pat Cummins bowled the spell of his life

Chasing this huge target, Rajasthan showed symptoms of an explosive start as the opening batsmen Ben Stokes and Robin Uthappa smashed 19 runs off first five balls. However, in an attempt to hit another big shot, Uthappa lost his wicket to Pat Cummins on the sixth ball of the first over. This initiated a collapse of RR’s batting line-up as Stokes, Smith and Sanju Samson lost their wickets without making any significant contribution.

The Royals were in deep trouble, however, they still had some hopes from Jos Buttler and Rahul Tewatia. Though, both the batsmen showed some character, they went back to the pavilion after scoring 35 and 31 respectively. After that it was just a formality for KKR as they won the match by a whopping 60 runs.

Pat Cummins bowled the spell of his life, 4-0-34-4, to take the Knight Riders home in a much-needed win. He was aptly supported by Shivam Mavi and Varun Chakravarthy who took two wickets each while Kamlesh Nagarkoti also had one to his name. Some credit needs to be given to KKR’s gloveman Dinesh Karthik who took stunning catches behind the stumps to contribute to the victory. Karthik had as many as 4 catches to his name in this fixture.
