Hoping to register a hat-trick of victories, Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians locked horns with a wobbly Rajasthan Royals side at Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Tuesday. Royals, led by Steve Smith, were hoping to shrug off their woes of last two matches and get back to winning ways.

In the end, it was the Mumbai Paltan who emerged victorious at Abu Dhabi. After amassing a 193-run total, Mumbai’s bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah, wreaked havoc and restricted RR to a modest total of 136 runs. With this win, MI registered their fourth victory of the tournament and also paved their way up to the top of the points table.

After winning the toss, the defending champions elected to bat first as skipper Rohit and Quinton de Kock marched to the middle. The duo did hit a flurry of boundaries in the Powerplay to provide MI with a steady start. However, the Mumbai side suffered its first blow after De Kock was sent back to the pavilion by debutant Kartik Tyagi.

Skipper Rohit, after scoring a 23-ball 35, also made his way to the dugout, followed by Ishan Kishan, who departed on a golden duck. Shreyas Gopal plucked both the wickets on consecutive deliveries to put MI under pressure. However, Suryakumar Yadav finally marked his arrival in this year’s IPL and slammed a 47-ball 79. Weaving his knock around 11 fours and 2 sixes, Yadav regained form and played a crucial role in MI amassing 193 on the board.

Suryakumar was also assisted by Hardik Pandya in end. The Baroda all-rounder, known for his explosive prowess, slammed a 19-ball 30 as MI successfully posted a daunting total.

In response, Royals were derailed in the first three overs itself after losing their three pivotal batsmen– Yashasvi Jaiswal, Steve Smith and Sanju Samson. The lethal duo of Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled RR’s run-chase in the initial overs.

After suffering early blows, Jos Buttler stuck in the middle and stitched a crucial 70-run knock. However, after the Englishman’s departure in the 14th over, RR’s chances of clinching the match were almost nil. Tom Curran (15) and Rahul Tewatia (5) also failed to provide fans with some late fireworks.

A few late boundaries came off Jofra Archer’s willow as he slammed 11-ball 24. In the end, Royals were wrapped up by the defending champions on a meagre 136. While MI scripted a hat-trick of triumphs, RR registered three consecutive defeats.
