Two leading run-scorers in the tournament’s history– Rohit Sharma and David Warner– locked horns at a mouth-watering Sharjah wicket in Match 17 of IPL 2020. Defending champions Mumbai Indians, vying for a third triumph, faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second afternoon game of the on-going IPL edition.

It was Rohit Sharma’s men who emerged as winners at Sharjah. After gathering a 208-run total on the board, the Mumbai Paltan was able to curb SRH to 174 runs. MI, continuing their winning momentum, clinched their third victory of IPL 2020 and paved their way up to the top of the points table. After thumping SRH by 34 runs, MI are currently sitting at the top with six points.

Rohit, after winning the toss, elected to bat first and fans were all set to witness yet another batting carnage at Sharjah. Rohit did set the ball rolling by hitting by smashing a six in the first over. However, on the very next ball, the MI skipper feather-edged the ball to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. To his dismay, the Hitman failed to provide his side with a robust start.

After the skipper’s departure, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav produced a flurry of boundaries to stockpile runs in the Powerplay. While Yadav scored 27 off 18, De Kock smashed a 39-ball 67 to lay the foundation of a colossal total. Ishan Kishan also bolstered MI’s run-flow in the middle overs by gathering 31 off 23 deliveries.

Mumbai Indians continue their winning momentum

At the death, all eyes were on the destructive Hardik Pandya-Kieron Pollard to tonk the ball outside Sharjah’s compact boundaries. Pandya scored 28 off 19 balls while Pollard gathered 25 from 13. Though the junior Pandya departed on the second ball of the last over, the senior one stood up and hammered 20 runs off the last four deliveries, steering MI to a dominant total of 208 runs.

In response, SRH started off by losing Jonny Bairstow in the fifth over. The Hyderabad side was left reeling at 34/1 when Manish Pandey walked in the middle and stitched a 60-run partnership with Warner. Chasing a massive 208-run total, the pair kept hitting timely boundaries to keep the asking run-rate under control.

Warner, who has a penchant for scoring match-defining knocks, slammed a brilliant half-century to keep SRH in the contest. In the last six overs, the Orange Army required 79 runs to defeat the defending champions. But Warner’s departure in the 16th over reduced the possibility of SRH’s win by a huge extent.

The equation boiled down to 67 runs needed off 26 deliveries, with the young pair of Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad in the middle. Bowing down to MI’s impressive bowling show at the end, SRH were able to amass just 174 runs on the board as they handed a 34-run victory to the defending champions.
