Two of the biggest start of Indian cricket– Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma — with a victory each under their belt in their IPL 2020 voyage, locked horns in the tenth match of the tournament at Dubai. It turned out to be a high-scoring thriller as fans witnessed the second super over of this year’s IPL. In the high-octane drama, it was Kohli’s men who eventually emerged as the winners. Chasing down a target of 8 runs in the super over, the Kohli-de Villiers duo guided RCB to their second win in this year’s IPL.

Rohit, after winning the toss, put RCB to bat first as their fresh opening IPL 2020 pair of Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch marched into the middle. While Padikkal remained quiet at the other end, Finch hit a flurry of boundaries to guide RCB to a dominant 59-run total in the first six overs.

The Australia limited-overs skipper also slammed his first half-century of the tournament and was hoping to convert it into a big one. However, his innings was dented in the ninth over bowled by Trent Boult. Trying to clear the rope over off, Finch hit the ball straight at Kieron Pollard.

Upon Finch’s departure, all eyes were on skipper Kohli to play his first colossal knock of the tournament. However, Kohli’s woeful run continued after he was dismissed on just 3. In the last three matches, the 31-year-old has amassed just 18 runs.

After skipper Kohli’s departure, Padikkal and AB de Villiers steadied the RCB by stitching a 62-run stand. Padikkal slammed his second IPL half-century to keep the scoreboard ticking. But the world was yet to witness De Villiers’ whirlwind knock. ‘Mr 360’ smoked a 24-ball 55 including 4 fours and 4 sixes to steer RCB to a 201-run total.

In response, the Mumbai Paltan had the worse possible start as they lost skipper Rohit in the second over. Washington Sundar struck gold in the Powerplay by showing the exit door to Rohit when he was on 8. Suryakumar Yadav also followed Rohit after nicking to the ball to wicketkeeper De Villiers in the subsequent over.

Ishan Kishan almost steered MI past the finishing line

After suffering two early blows, MI’s run-flow was affected considerably as they managed to amass just 35 runs in the first six overs. Succumbing to the mounting pressure, Quinton de Kock fell prey to Yuzvendra Chahal, leaving MI demented on 39/3. After the top-order debacle, it was Ishan Kishan and Pollard who kept their side into the game.

The Mumbai batting unit needed to pull off a miracle in the last six overs as the equation was– 104 runs to grab in just 36 deliveries. MI had no option but to deal in fours and sixes in those 36 balls. And that’s what happened in the first 12 deliveries of those four overs. Ishan, along with a brawny-looking Pollard, slammed 49 runs in two overs.

It all boiled down to MI needing 11 off the last three deliveries. Ishan slammed a six and it looked like a certain win for Rohit’s troops. However, there was still a twist in the tale. The southpaw, on 99, got out on the next delivery and Pollard slammed a four on the last ball to tie the match.

In the dramatic super over, Navdeep Saini’s brilliant bowling effort restricted MI to 7 runs. However, RCB still had to face Jasprit Bumrah’s fury to clinch the victory in the super over. It was the dependable Kohli-de Villiers duo who ultimately finished the game and hunted down the target on the last ball of the super over. While several fans lauded batting performances from Ishan and Pollard, many expressed their excitement over the super over drama.
