The 50th match of the ongoing 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) pitted Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on October 30, Friday at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. It was a must-win game for both the franchises to keep their hopes of making it to the playoffs alive. Registering victory in the game against Punjab by 7 wickets, Rajasthan has climbed up the points table to reach 5th position with 12 points.

Having won the toss, Steven Smith invited the Kings to bat first. KXIP had a disappointing start as Mandeep Singh bagged a golden duck. However, all this got covered after Chris Gayle stitched a brilliant partnership of 120 runs with skipper KL Rahul, with the latter contributing just 46 runs. Gayle smacked some brilliant cricketing shots and reclaimed his title of the best T20 batsman.

It was all about the Universe Boss in Abu Dhabi as he was all set to score his maiden century in IPL 2020 but a pinpoint yorker by Jofra Archer in the final over, when Gayle was playing at 99, resulted in Chris’ dismissal. Though the West Indies Superstar failed to complete his century by 1 run, his assault on the Rajasthan bowlers resulted in Punjab posting a competitive total of 185 on the board.

Rajasthan Royals’ dream start

The Royals got off to a brilliant start owing to the scintillating innings of 50 runs off 26 deliveries including 6 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 192.31 by Ben Stokes. The whole batting line-up was brutal with the bat as they launched an assault on every bowler of the opposition. This was followed by a 51-run stand between Robin Uthappa and Sanju Samson. In the 11th over, Murugan Ashwin got the better of Uthappa (30 off 23).

RR was soon jolted again in the 15th over when the in-form Sanju Samson, who was playing at 48 off 25, got run-out while completing the second run. However, the team was in a good position at that time with 145 for 3. As Rajasthan needed just 41 runs in 34 balls, both Steven Smith and Jos Buttler pressed the accelerator and played quickfire cameos of 31* off 20 and 22* off 11 respectively to take RR home with 15 balls to spare.
