Match 9 of IPL 2020 witnessed two impressive sides– Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab locking horns with each other at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. With the presence of in-form batsmen like KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Mayank Agarwal and Steve Smith, it was expected to be a hard-hitting encounter.

As expected, the match was nothing short of a roller-coaster ride, owing to several impressive batting performances. In the end, it was Royals who emerged victorious in the high-scoring thriller where both sides crossed the 200-run mark.

After being put to bat first, KXIP’s Karnataka pair of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal unleashed fury and demolished RR’s bowling force. Stitching a colossal 183-run opening stand, Rahul and Mayank continued their stellar form and smoked boundaries for fun.

The Mayank-Rahul show was eclipsed by Samson and Tewatia

Slamming his maiden IPL ton, Mayank scored 106 off just 50 deliveries. Weaving his ton around 10 fours and 7 sixes, Mayank etched one of the best innings in the history of IPL. He also paved his way into the list of fastest IPL centuries by Indian players. After notching up his ton in just 45 deliveries, Mayank now stands second in the list below Yusuf Pathan, who had slammed a 37-ball 100 in 2010.

Rahul, from the other end, also kept hitting boundaries as he ended up scoring a 54-ball 69. On the back of Mayank-Rahul’s fireworks, KXIP gathered a dominant total 223-run total on the scoreboard.

But the game wasn’t just yet over for the Rajasthan side, especially when they had the likes of Smith and Samson in their artillery. After the early departure of Jos Buttler, the Samson-Smith duo hit a flurry of boundaries to stitch a quick-fire 81-run stand. Smith, however, was shown the exit door by James Neesham in the ninth over. Smith departed after scoring 50 off just 27 deliveries but Samson continued his destructive spree.

With his sublime touch, Samson slammed 85 off just 42 deliveries, weaving his blistering inning around 4 fours and 7 maximums. The Kerala stalwart was expected to steer RR over the finishing line but his outstanding show was halted by Mohammed Shami in the 17th over.

But Rahul Tewatia, who initially was struggling to score, unleashed his potential and turned the tide by whacking five sixes in the 18th over bowled by Sheldon Cottrell. Jofra Archer, in the next over, also joined the party and smoked two consecutive sixes against Shami.

Tewatia, who was 8 off 19 balls at one stage, reached his fifty but got out on the last ball of the penultimate over. Tom Curran, in the last over, smashed a four and finished things off for RR as they pulled off highest run-chase in the history of the IPL. Twitter erupted after RR’s emphatic win as they heaped praise on Samson as well as Tewatia. Praises also poured in for Rahul and Mayank for their impressive partnership.
