Aiming to shrug off their woeful starts, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns in the thirteenth match of IPL 2020 at Dubai International Stadium. It was the Orange Army which emerged victorious against MS Dhoni’s troops. Clinching their second victory of the tournament, SRH registered a 7-run win to move up fourth in the points table.
Both the sides, despite having multiple match-winners in their artillery, had a poor start to their IPL 2020 journey after losing two out of first three matches. On a pitch that didn’t have much grass on it, SRH skipper David Warner won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision didn’t prove fruitful for the Hyderabad side as they suffered two early blows. Jonny Bairstow was first sent back in the first over itself by Deepak Chahar. The pacer, bowling a peach of a delivery, baffled Bairstow and shattered the woodwork.
After Bairstow’s early departure, skipper Warner and Manish Pandey stitched a 46-run stand to add vital runs in the Powerplay. But the partnership was eventually broken by Shardul Thakur as he dismissed Pandey on 29 in the eighth over.
An exhausted MS Dhoni failed to steer CSK past the finishing line
SRH was jolted by two more blows in the 11th over bowled by veteran Piyush Chawla. Skipper Warner, trying to clear long on, was caught by the safe hands of experienced Proea Faf du Plessis. On the subsequent delivery, Kane Williamson also walked back after getting run out due to a miscommunication and SRH was left reeling at 69/4.
After the departure of four experienced campaigners, Hyderabad’s amateur middle-order was exposed to the bowling unit of three-time IPL champions. Defying all odds, the young pair of Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma rose to the occasion and steered SRH to a daunting 164-run total.
While Garg stitched an unbeaten knock of 51 off 26, Sharma gathered 31 off 24 deliveries. Their 77-run stand was crucial in bolstering the Hyderabad side’s run-flow.
SRH, known for their dominant bowling set-up, wreaked havoc on CSK’s top-order in the second innings. The top-order trio of Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis was sent back to the Pavilion before the end of the Powerplay, leaving CSK baffled at 36/3. Another youngster– 18-year-old Abdul Samad– stood up for SRH and scalped the wicket of Kedar Jadhav in his first over as the Yellow Army was in doldrums after losing four batsmen for a scanty 42-run total.
But with ‘Thala’ MS Dhoni in the middle, fans still had a glimmer of hope about CSK somehow crossing the finishing line. Dhoni, along with Ravindra Jadeja, tried to revive CSK’s halted run-flow by adding singles and doubles. However, with 94 required from the last six overs, it was rather an intimidating situation for the men in yellow jerseys.
It all boiled down to CSK needing 63 from the last three overs. They ultimately managed to post just 157 runs on the board, handing SRH their second victory of the tournament. A valiant late effort by skipper Dhoni did raise the hopes of CSK fans and an exhausted skipper worked like a Trojan to steer his side to the triumph. But in the end, CSK lost the battle by 7 runs.
