This was the second time Josh Hazlewood entered the IPL auction. 2018 was the first time when he registered for the IPL and was unsold. When he put up his name again this time, it was expected that he would go unsold again. However, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) decided to surprise everyone as they bought the Australian pacer for his base price of INR 2 crore.

It was a strange call from CSK to opt for Hazlewood. The last time he featured in a T20 match was back in March 2016. It was in the World T20 and since then, he has never played a single T20. In fact, the New South Wales pacer was omitted for this year’s World Cup as well.

Moreover, CSK had quite a few options at their disposal comprising likes of Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Alzarri Joseph, Liam Plunkett and the others. Hazlewood has played very little white-ball cricket in 2019. There’s no doubt he’s a quality pacer but his T20 record and his ability in the shortest format don’t go in his favour.
