The IPL is such a lucrative and popular tournament that the players’ auction holds special significance for the ardent and loyal fans of each franchise. Everyone waits with bated breath to see who has been retained in the squad of their favourite team and who has been released. It’s this anticipation which is unparalleled.

As we head into another players auction which is going to be held on December 19, 2019, in Kolkata the focus will shift on the purse available with each franchise and their team combination/squad strength. The franchise think tank would need to factor in what areas they must look to address through the auction and accordingly plan a targeted approach heading into the players’ auction.

Being a World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan of England could come in for some detailed scrutiny and interest from various franchises. The southpaw led his team from the front in the 2019 World Cup and was also the leading six-hitter of the tournament with 22 sixes in 10 innings. In their game against  Afghanistan, Morgan created history by hitting the most sixes (17) in an ODI match. The combination of his six-hitting capability apart from having the captaincy experience makes him an extremely potent weapon for any T20 team to have.

The IPL teams were not interested in Eoin Morgan during the previous auction; nobody targeted the left-hander when his name popped out. However, the case could be different this time.

Here’s we look at three teams that can pick up Eoin Morgan in the auction:

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR already have an attacking and impressive middle-order comprising of batsmen such as Nitish Rana and Andre Russell. The addition of Eoin Morgan would add further potency to their strong suit. Their in-form skipper Dinesh Karthik could be the floater, moving up or down the batting order depending on the match situation.

Chris Lynn (provided they buy him back) as an opener, Eoin Morgan in the middle order and Russell as the finisher looks like a dream overseas batting combination. And looking at KKR’s last season, everyone got a feeling that there were tensions within the team management and also players within the team. Not many players seemed too determined in the latter half of the tournament leading to some sub-standard performances.

Furthermore, Morgan is a big admirer of Kolkata’s newly appointed batting coach Brendon McCullum. It was the New Zealander’s style of captaincy that galvanized and inspired the southpaw to turn things around for the England after a disastrous World Cup in 2015.

Having renowned voices like McCullum and Morgan in the setup would help calm the atmosphere down. They are composed individuals who know how to approach tense situations positively. Also, if Eoin Morgan does get picked up by KKR apart from offering solidity to the middle-order, he could also be an option to captain the side which could allow DK to focus only on wicket-keeping and batting.
