Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful franchises in the history of the IPL, have had a topsy-turvy ride so far in this year’s edition in the UAE. After defeating defending champions Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener, the Chennai side suffered three thumping defeats, endangering their chances of lifting the trophy this year.

Skipper MS Dhoni was also scrutinized after he demoting himself down the batting order, especially when the team was in a crunch situation. Silencing all their doubters, the Yellow Army finally got back to winning ways on Sunday as they registered a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Kings XI Punjab.

Following Chennai’s dominant victory, former Australia pacer Brett Lee showered praise on Dhoni for backing his players. According to Lee, the CSK captain believes in his players and even commits to the Playing XI.

Hats off to Dhoni for backing Shane Watson: Brett Lee

“The great thing about MS Dhoni is he believes his players, commits to the eleven that are there. He also backs the 13-14 that are there if there’s an injury. It’s the XI he believes in, commits to the team. They played so well and as they say, the lions will sleep pretty well tonight,” Lee said on Star Sports.

Lee further pointed out how Dhoni backed Shane Watson amid his woeful form with the bat in the first four matches. Watson had scored a meagre 52 runs at a strike-rate of 108.33 in those four fixtures. But the Australian all-rounder bounced back strongly by scoring 83 off 53 balls and steering CSK to the win against KXIP.

“Hats off to MSD for providing Watson with that opportunity and back his teammate. Watto came out and totally dominated it. The way he went down the line and didn’t go across the line; the last few games he went across the line. When he is on form, he can do it but Shane Watson, tonight, was on fire,” Lee further added.

After registering a massive victory against the KL Rahul-led side, CSK have climbed up to the sixth position with four points under their belt. They will now face fourth-placed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) next in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
