Sharjah Cricket Stadium witnessed an absolute run-fest in the ninth match of the IPL 2020 as two equipped sides– Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) rolled out a high-scoring thriller on Sunday. The Punjab side, after being put to bat first amassed a daunting 223-run total on the scoreboard, multiplying their chances of registering a consecutive win in their IPL 2020 journey.

On the back of a record 183-run opening stand between skipper KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal, KXIP stormed their way to a colossal total. Mayank, while toying with RR bowlers, smashed boundaries all over the ground to amass his maiden IPL century in just 45 deliveries. With his blistering ton, Mayank also paved his way into the list of fastest IPL tons. He smashed the second-fastest century by an Indian player in the tournament’s history.

Skipper Rahul, from the other end, also continued his stellar form and scored a 54-ball 69 to steer KXIP past the 200-run mark. The Mayank-Agarwal annihilation destroyed the RR bowling unit as they leaked heavy runs. In the wake of KXIP’s impressive batting show, the franchise took a sly dig at Jofra Archer on Twitter. Mentioning Archer’s bowling figures in the first innings (4-0-46-0), KXIP wrote– “You don’t see something like this from someone like Jofra so often”

Rahul Tewatia turned the tide with his 31-ball 53

But the game wasn’t finished just yet. In reply, Rajasthan Royals etched a monumental win as they pulled off the highest-ever run-chase in the tournament. KXIP bowed down to Sanju Samson’s carnage at Sharjah. The Kerala stalwart looked in sublime touch as he tonked bowlers all around the stadium. Samson hammered a 42-ball 85 and skipper Steve Smith also gathered a vital 27-ball 50.

But in the end, it was Rahul Tewatia who rose to the occasion after starting in a sluggish way. The southpaw, who was 8 off 19 balls at one stage– did something incredible in the 18th over, bowled by West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell. The left-hander whacked the West Indies pacer for five sixes in six deliveries to completely shift the match in his side’s favour. RR hunted down the total with three balls to spare as Sharjah Cricket Stadium witnessed one of the most thrilling games in the history of the IPL.

After RR’s spectacular heist, Archer trolled back KXIP on their tweet and wrote– “Well this aged well.” It was a woeful night for KXIP, especially for their pacers– Cottrell and Mohammed Shami. While Cottrell gave away 52 runs in his three overs, Shami leaked 53 off his four.
