The 20th match of the Indian Premier League saw action between Rajasthan Royals and defending champions, Mumbai Indians. Walking the field with bats first, MI posted another huge score of 193/4 on board and won the contest by 57 runs. The brilliant score came on the back of Suryakumar Yadav’s magnificent 79* off 47. The initial pace was provided by cameos of Rohit Sharma (35 off 23) and Quinton de Kock (23 off 15)

Suryakumar Yadav was ultimately named as the player of the match for his match-winning knock. Hardik Pandya accelerated Mumbai’s game towards the end and scored 30* off 19. Shreyas Gopal was the showman from Rajasthan Royals’ bowling section as he conceded 28 runs from four overs by naming two wickets to his credit.

MI’s dangerous bowling show led them home

Hunting down the heavy target in front, none of the batters displayed a decent show apart from Jos Buttler. Buttler was looking a potent threat at a moment and could have turned the game in Rajasthan’s favour before James Pattinson knocked him out. He scored a brilliant 70 off 44 balls. Jasprit Bumrah, James Pattinson, and Trent Boult showed a splendid bowling game from Mumbai’s end.

Losing skipper, Steve Smith said

I think losing wickets early doesn’t help, we haven’t been able to get off to a good start in the last three games. Outside of Jos and Archer at the end, we have a bit of work to do on our batting. He (Stokes) is not out till the 10th I think. He is not too far away, hopefully we can get a few wins before he’s back and then gain momentum. I don’t think we need to panic too much, it is just about implementing our plans and playing some good cricket for longer. We haven’t been able to do that in the last three games and we have to turn it around quickly. Hopefully get a bit of momentum.

Winning skipper, Rohit Sharma said

We strive to be out there and play well. We have a lot of quality and it’s about getting the job done. They all have a lot of confidence. They’re all talented and they can take the game away on their day and it’s all falling into place. The conditions are helpful here for the quick bowlers. It was nipping around to start with and it’s good to have bowlers who can exploit the conditions. We also worked a lot on our fielding, because it’s one of the controllables in the game and we made it a point to do that well.

Man of the match, Suryakumar Yadav said

I felt it was coming in this game, because in the last few games I was finding ways to get out. This time I just wanted to bat till the end. Loving the added responsibility at the top of the order, and I’ve just been told to play my game and express myself and I did just that. The lockdown helped me with my off-side game rather than just my leg-side pick-up shot. The team winning is really satisfying and at that situation I had to bat till the end to get the team to a perfect total, and then the bowlers came and finished things off.
