The 43rd match of the Indian Premier League 2020 set action between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. Both the teams came up to fight for the playoffs berth, where Punjab won the game by 12 runs. Batting first, KXIP reduced to a paltry total of 126/7 on the board. Mayank Agarwal couldn’t show up due to injury, and KL Rahul walked along with Mandeep Singh for the opening.

Chris Jordan was named as the player of the match as he sparked an absolute turnover for his team towards the end. Rahul’s 27 off 27 and Nicholas Pooran’s 32* off 28 only remained significant from Punjab’s end. The lower middle order failed totally to get anything for the team. Ace spinner Rashid Khan is leaving no stone unturned to trouble batsmen, and today’s game was no different. He picked two wickets by conceding just 14 runs.

Bowlers turned heroes for KXIP

Chasing an ordinary target, none of the batsmen rose to show heroics in the game. David Warner (35 off 20) and Vijay Shankar (26 off 27) got a handful of the runs for the team. Bowlers of KXIP stunned batsmen to help their team defend an ordinary total. Arshdeep Singh and Chris Jordan took three wickets each to get the team over the line in death overs. On the other hand, young Ravi Bishnoi conceded just 13 runs off his spell.

Losing skipper, David Warner said

Yeah it does (hurt a lot). Our bowlers did a fantastic job to restrict them. After the start we got, we took our foot off the pedal. Felt on that wicket it was going to get tougher once the spin came into it. For us it was about trying to apply pressure upfront, negate the swing bowling, but obviously we didn’t get across the line. They bowled well with the new ball (his bowlers). Didn’t get all the wickets upfront but we brought it back well. Today our bowlers executed the plans well, very happy with them. Just have to forget this game and move forward.

Winning skipper, KL Rahul said

Yes we are making it a habit. In the first half we somehow couldn’t make this a habit. I am just speechless right now to be honest. Very happy with the show from the boys. The work done is always behind the scenes, not just the players, but the support staff. You can’t change much in a player in two months but you can always make them mentally better and that’s what coach Kumble, Andy, Charl, Jonty and Wasim have done. After me and Mandeep played the first over we know it’s not a high scoring wicket. We were thinking close to 160. They went hard in the first six. But I knew we could pull things back if we don’t leak many runs in the powerplay as we have two leggies. We sat down and thought about the things that the bowlers would need.

Player of the match, Chris Jordan said

I feel great. We had a pretty tough start to the tournament, but the entire squad, the entire management kept a lot of belief, and that’s why you see that performance tonight. It’s part and parcel of life [not being a regular]. It’s a big squad. The coaches are trying to get the right combination. As long as I get one game, I get two games, the team win is all that matters. Arshdeep has been brilliant since he’s come in, he’s brought a free mind, free spirit. He’s not that experienced and I think that’s helped, because he’s just backed himself. In the crucial moments, I just try to keep him calm, and play a support role as much as possible. [Bowling to Holder] I tried to stay nice and calm, think of what the team needed at that moment. Just tried to bowl a nice, quiet over.
