The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a disastrous campaign in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise finished at the bottom of the points table with 11 points. Barring a couple of finals, the team has put up disappointing performances in the other seasons. Ahead of the next season, the Challengers have made quite a few significant changes in their setup.

Mike Hesson has been appointed as their Director of Cricket Operations. Hesson has been grabbing the limelight over the last few days. He narrowly missed out to Ravi Shastri for the role of head coach in the Indian cricket team. Recently, Hesson, under whose tutelage the New Zealand team qualified for the 2015 World Cup final, said that he didn’t apply for the same position in Pakistan.

Hesson upbeat for his RCB stint

Hesson was lastly a part of the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) team, led by Ravi Ashwin, and left the team earlier this month. After joining RCB, Hesson is now looking forward to working with Simon Katich, who was roped in as their head coach, and Virat Kohli, the Challengers’ skipper. The experienced campaigner also called the RCB team management a motivated group.

The veteran took to Twitter and wrote, “Huge honour to join @RCBTweets Looking forward to joining the team with Simon Katich and @imVkohli along with a highly motivated player and management group,”

Katich, their new coach, has previously worked for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL and bid goodbye to the franchise only this year. Meanwhile, the Challengers have parted ways with Gary Kirsten, their previous head coach, and Ashish Nehra, their bowling mentor. Back in 2018, Kirsten, the 2011 World Cup-winning coach, joined the RCB team management, replacing Daniel Vettori.

The former South African cricketer couldn’t change the Challengers’ fortunes in the cash-rich T20 tournament. Nehra also came in the firing line on a number of instances owing to some decisions, which were considered rather bizarre. Kohli, the captain, has also had to face a lot of criticism. Despite his poor show as the skipper, the RCB management has persisted with him.
