Kolkata Knight Riders were involved in the most bizarre run-chase as they locked horns against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Despite the thrilling show by KKR’s middle-order, CSK managed to have the last laugh as they won the match by 18 runs.

Entering the contest, CSK made one change in their squad as they replaced Dwayne Bravo with Lungi Ngidi. KKR, on the other hand, replaced Harbhajan Singh and Shakib Al Hasan with Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Sunil Narine respectively. The toss went in the favor of Eoin Morgan and he invited MS Dhoni to put the total on the board.

The opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis came with a different mindset in the middle as they started smashing the ball like anything all over the park. They took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners as they stitched an impressive partnership of 115 runs in just 12.2 overs. Varun Chakravarthy gave the first breakthrough to his team but it was too late as the Super Kings already got the desired momentum and went on to post a mammoth total of 220 runs on the scoreboard.

Faf was the highest run-getter for the three-time champions as he played a sublime knock of 95 runs off 60 deliveries. The batter was aptly supported by Ruturaj as he added 64 runs to the scoreboard. For KKR, Varun was the most successful bowler as he was the only one to concede runs at an economy less than seven.

Pat Cummins goes berserk with the willow

Chasing 221 was never going to be easy for the Knight Riders and Deepak Chahar almost made the task impossible due to his exploits with the new ball. Chahar ran through the opposition’s batting order as he picked as many as four wickets including the likes of Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Eoin Morgan, and Sunil Narine. After 5.2 overs, KKR were reeling at a score of 31 for five and many assumed that there was nothing much left in the game.

However, then started an astounding power-hitting show as Andre Russell played a fabulous knock of 54 runs off 22 balls. After Russell, it was Dinesh Karthik who stepped up to the occasion to add 40 runs to the scoreboard and drive the team’s total to 146.

Karthik’s dismissal in the 15th over resulted in KKR losing all the hopes but the best batting innings was yet to come. The Australian pacer Pat Cummins showed some incredible power-hitting as he scored 66 off 34. In the end, the equation boiled down to 20 off 6 but KKR lost all their 10 wickets and Cummins remained not out. Despite a stunning fightback by KKR, CSK won the game by 18 runs.
