Kolkata Knight Riders won their second match of the IPL 2021 season when they defeated Punjab Kings by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, April 26. The match ended with 20 balls to spare as KKR captain Eoin Morgan got back to form with an unbeaten 47.

Earlier in the evening, Morgan won the toss and decided to bowl first. The fielding and bowling effort of the KKR team was almost on point. They maintained the pressure well on the openers, bowling tight lines. This brought the wickets of KL Rahul and Chris Gayle in the sixth and seventh over respectively.

Mayank Agarwal scored 31 runs off 34 balls, and his wicket put more pressure on the Punjab Kings team. Wickets kept falling and the innings never really took off. Shivam Mavi was very impressive, bowling a four-over spell for just 13 runs and picking the wicket of Gayle. Pat Cummins took two wickets and so did Sunil Narine. Varun Chakravarthy got one scalp while Prasidh Krishna struck thrice during his four-over spell.

Captain Morgan seals it for KKR

All these wickets didn’t allow Punjab to get away with runs. There was a cameo of 30 runs from 18 balls from Chris Jordan, who was playing his first match of the tournament. Punjab Kings finished on 123 for nine in their 20 overs. Considering the nature of the Ahmedabad pitch, this score was going to be very difficult to defend.

But, Punjab started their bowling effort in a much better fashion. Moises Henriques got Nitish Rana out for a duck while Shubman Gill was dismissed by Mohammed Shami. When the wicket of Sunil Narine was taken by Arshdeep Singh, completed by a brilliant catch by Ravi Bishnoi, KKR were struggling at 17 for three.

From there on, captain Morgan took charge and he found good support in Rahul Tripathi. The latter of the two played some aggressive shots to put the pressure back on the Punjab team, who were down defending a low score anyway. Their rescue partnership which yielded 66 runs, made sure their team was out of danger.

Tripathi got out for 41 runs from 32 balls and left the chase to be completed by Morgan, who himself scored an unbeaten 47 runs from 40 balls. Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik played cameos of 10 and 12 respectively, as the KKR team was able to finish the run chase with five wickets in hand and 20 balls to spare.
