The 28th match of the Indian Premier League saw action between the current two bottom teams on the points table. The RR side completely outplayed the Hyderabad team as they won the game by 55 runs. After owning the toss, SRH invited Samson and his men to put up with the willows first. The opening turned out to be magical as Jos Buttler made sure to break the back of Hyderabad bowlers.

He smashed a terrific ton (124 off 64) to help RR post the highest score (220) of this season so far. Buttler was declared as the player of the match for his sheer masterclass. He was supported by Samson as he added good 48 runs to the score. While all the bowlers of SRH were hammered ruthlessly, star spinner Rashid Khan maintained the economy of 6.0 and picked a wicket.

Mustafizur Rahman shines with the ball for RR

While chasing the total, Manish Pandey (31) and Jonny Bairstow (30) did build a fine partnership but it was too small in front of the mammoth target. None of the other batsmen could add anything substantial after this. Mustafizur Rahman stole the show with the ball as he picked three wickets for RR while conceding at 5.00. Morris also clinched three wickets to his credit.

Losing skipper, Kane Williamson said:

It was a tough day and a very competitive total from Rajasthan. Jos was outstanding and had his day out. With the bat, you need a few things to go your way. For us, we’ve had a number of challenges over the last three weeks, but we keep fronting up and make adjustments. Jos and Sanju are key threats in their side, so we wanted to bowl Rashid to bowl as many deliveries to them as possible. It’s character-building for us. Fine margins and this game can change quickly. Exceptional batting from Rajasthan, but we need to build on a few things. A number of leaders in the group and it’s important we stay right. He’s a world-class player and I’m sure a number of conversations will be had [Will Warner be back in the XI at some point?]

Winning skipper, Sanju Samson said:

Absolutely, it’s always a pleasure to bat with Jos. When Jos goes on, it’s always a good sight for us. I think it was a very clinical performance. We started well in the powerplay and just stuck to our plans. It can be a funny game and they have some hitters in their line-up. I think we haven’t won as many matches as we would have liked, but it can be funny in the IPL. One ball can change the result. It doesn’t matter if I am in form, I want to contribute in a better and dominant way and help my team win.

Player of the match, Jos Buttler said:

I think sometimes you have to swallow your ego when you’re not in perfect touch. You have to give yourself time and find your way. I tried to stay in and keep the belief that something will click. It’s a small ground. The more balls you face you can capitalise in the end. That’s been the theme of the IPL – players who are consistent have shown us. I pride myself on my performance for the team. We haven’t played our best cricket, hopefully for myself and the team we can kick on in the back half of the tournament.
