Chennai Super Kings’ cat and mouse with Delhi Capitals continued. Yet another time, CSK got their top spot back, this time after beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The Yellow Army were put under pressure, but they scripted a jailbreak and secured their seventh victory. As far as RCB are concerned, their confidence won’t be on the higher side.

CSK make a strong comeback

The Challengers got off to a flying start after being sent in to bat first. Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal helped RCB rack up 55 runs in the powerplay. The duo went on to stitch together a partnership of 111 runs for the opening wicket off 13.2 overs. Dwayne Bravo gave CSK some breather after he got rid of Virat, who scored 53 off 41 with the help of six fours and one six.

After his dismissal, RCB managed only 45 runs off 40 balls. The 17th over turned out to be a crucial one as Shardul Thakur sent back AB de Villiers and Padikkal off consecutive balls. Padikkal top-scored for the Challengers as he made 70 off 50 balls with five fours and three sixes. Bravo was again impressive with the ball in hand after he accounted for three wickets and gave away only 24 runs.

RCB bowlers couldn’t hold on

The Super Kings made optimum utilisation of the powerplay as they notched 59 runs in it. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis scored 38 and 31 runs respectively and laid the platform for the chase. The openers put together a partnership of 71 runs off 50 balls. Both batters got out in quick succession, but Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu didn’t let any sort of pressure build in the chase.

Even as Moeen made 23 runs, Rayudu smashed his way to an 18-ball 23 with two sixes. Both the batters fell prey to Harshal Patel, who is the current Purple Cap holder in the tournament. However, Suresh Raina smashed a four and a six off Wanindu Hasaranga in the 17th over to make it easy for CSL. The left-hander scored an unbeaten 17 with help of MS Dhoni, who also hit two fours.
