Punjab Kings, on Saturday, climbed to the fifth spot in the points after registering their fourth win of the 2021 IPL. The KL Rahul-led team defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by five runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The game turned out to be a low-scoring affair and went right down to the wire, but PBKS held their nerves to get over the line. Meanwhile, the Sunrisers kept languishing at the bottom.

Kings crawl over a run-a-ball

On a difficult strip to bat on, PBKS strained initially as Jason Holder removed both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal inside the powerplay. Rahul looked good for his 21 with three fours before he mistimed one to Jagadeesha Suchith. The 42-year-old Chris Gayle laboured to 14 at a strike-rate of 82.35 after which Rashid Khan trapped him. Gayle resorted to taking the DRS, but to no avail.

Aiden Markram was the standout batter for the Kings as he made 27 useful runs, though at less than a run-a-ball. Deepak Hooda, Harpreet Brar and Nathan Ellis played handy cameos to take PBKS to 125 in 20 overs. Holder stood out among SRH’s bowlers as he got three wickets and gave away only 19 runs in four overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a tad expensive after he had an economy of 8.50.

Holder’s knock goes in vain

The run-chase started on a disastrous note for the Sunrisers. Mohammed Shami nipped out David Warner and Kane Williamson to rock SRH’s top-order. Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav were ambling along before Ravi Bishnoi accounted for their wickets. Abdul Samad tried to lay into the leg-spinner, but holed out to Gayle. In the meantime, the required rate climbed out to around nine.

Amidst the fall of wickets, Jason Holder kept the Sunrisers alive in the game. He smashed two five sixes off Shami, Bishnoi and Ellis to keep the required rate in check. In the last over, SRH needed 16 runs and Holder carted Ellis away for a six. In the fourth ball of the over, Holder turned down a single, but in the end, Ellis held his ground. Holder scored a 29-ball 47, but his knock went in vain.
